Australia still racist, says surgeon Charlie Teo

Prominent neurosurgeon Charlie Teo has again courted controversy, by saying Australia remains a racist country.

Dr Teo has been appointed by the Australia Day Council of New South Wales to be its keynote speaker next week, and says he will not hold back.

He has told 702 ABC Sydney there may be less racism but it is still commonplace, with his daughter targeted for her Chinese appearance.

"When I was a young fellow there was quite a lot of racism and it was one of the major criticisms I had of Australia and I guess it was a reason why I embraced America when I went there for 10 years, one of the reasons at least," Dr Teo said.

"Since I've come back I haven't experienced as much racism as I had 50 years ago, but unfortunately I still think it's there.

"It's not something we should not talk about or cover up because it is unfortunately alive and still exists in Australia.

"I had an Indian neurosurgeon visiting me a couple of years ago and it was really sad. The fellow was standing at the traffic lights and some guy drove past and spat on him and told him to go home.

"I found it a little bit glib that politicians were reassuring the Indian government that anti-Indian sentiment didn't exist in Australia, but unfortunately I think it does.

"It's very difficult for people who aren't of Asian appearance to say that there's no anti-Asian sentiment... You've got to really be in their shoes to make statements like that."

Dr Teo says it is not only white Australians who are racist, though.

"There are so many races that are racist. Chinese for example are very racist. Some of the comments my mother made when she came out here first would surprise you," he said.

"It's not something that's unique to white Australians but when it's directed against an Asian, and I can only speak from that point of view, it's almost always white Australians."

It is a year since the surgeon last courted controversy, when he was criticised by other doctors for auctioning tickets to watch him operate on cancer patients.

I think we're slightly better than average when it comes to the general population. The UK is a bit more racist than us.  The same goes for most European countries. The US is probably about the same. Indonesia - getting better but still more racist than us. In China, there is racism, but it's subtle.
Russia is much more racist. Japan is probably the most racist of the lot.

Canada and New Zealand are less racist.

In Indonesia and many parts of Africa you get what I'd term reverse racism. An Australian friend of mine of Indonesian origin says that when he stops at a hotel in Indonesia, he speaks English so that they give him better service.

That might be more economic than race based.

So all countries are racist to some extent.  Why worry then?  Why whip ourselves into a self-righteous frenzy over something that exists everywhere?  Perhaps it demonstrates that it's a natural part of life, and the current hysterical witchhunts are simply a manifestation of over zealous idiots creating a scapegoat to demonise.

I said it yesterday, too many undergrads trying to justify their existence instead of working. Wink

Massive uptake of psychology & suddenly every boy over 6 months has some sort of acronym & discipline will destroy creativity.

Aren't you one of the "the only real australians are aborigines" crowd?
It's not very nice to imply "australians" (read: Aborigines) are of low intelligence.  It's true, but it's still not nice.

Good man.  I might add that these same 'over zealous idiots' have such compliant personalities, so devoid of individual thought, so in-line with 'groupthink' that in another era they would have displayed the exact same fervour in rooting out any 'designated enemies'.  THEY would have been the ones lynching black people from trees.  THEY would have been the ones ratting out jews to the nazis.
