Supermarket Food Lables Mislead Shoppers.
Dec 26th, 2011 at 5:30am

COLES and Woolworths are selling imported food under their private labels without disclosing where it comes from, while still being able to boast it is "Made in Australia".   Huh

The big supermarkets are using labelling loopholes that avoid disclosing where imports come from, despite laws stating shoppers should be told the country of origin of their food.

The Herald has also established another loophole allows food from countries such as China to be imported through New Zealand and sold to shoppers without an accurate "country-of-origin" label.

When the supermarkets were asked about examples of imported food sold under their private labels without showing a country of origin, Coles did not disclose the original source of two fruit juices.

Woolworths revealed Homebrand dried apricots, sultanas and dates were sourced from Turkey, and 90 per cent of Homebrand orange juice concentrate was from Brazil.   Sad

The Woolworths labels do not mention these countries, only describing the dried fruits as "Packed in Australia from imported ingredients".

A spokeswoman for Woolworths agreed it was impossible for customers to determine the country of origin of these products "but we would also make the point that this labelling complies with what we are required to do".

There is widespread disaffection with the labelling system. Coles, the Australian Food and Grocery Council and Choice want a better approach.

Only one in 100 Australians can explain what ''Made in Australia'' actually means under the complicated formula in the law, according to research by the labelling lobby group Australian Made, Australian Grown.   Sad

"We believe it is so complicated and people are so confused about what this means that it tends to devalue the Made in Australia label," the chief executive of the grocery council, Kate Carnell, said.

In one example at Coles, its Smartbuy three-litre apple and blackcurrant juice is sold under the label "Made in Australia from imported ingredients".

To use "Made in Australia" without further qualification, manufacturers must meet a test that shows a substantial transformation and at least 50 per cent of the value of the good being created in Australia, including the packaging.

Despite the confusion, Australian consumers place considerable value on knowing where their food comes from.

Research by the consultancy group Datamonitor shows 67 per cent of Australians believe it is important to choose groceries from Australia and 69 per cent are concerned about the safety of foreign or imported food.   Wink

The federal government took no action this month on reforms to clarify country-of-origin labels proposed in the Blewett report into food labelling.

Loopholes in the laws include food that is imported into New Zealand, repackaged and sent to Australia, with no need for a label about where the food originally came from.

In Australia, foods must be labelled with their country of origin under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

However, a loophole exists as New Zealand has a domestic policy of voluntary country-of-origin labels. The food can then be sold without country-of-origin labels in Australia under a free trade agreement.

Both Coles and Woolworths say all their New Zealand-sourced food is labelled under the higher Australian standards.

But the loophole is being exploited. David McKinna, a food industry consultant, said one example involved frozen squid processed in China that was sent to New Zealand for repackaging then exported to Australia. It was being sold with the label ''Product of Australia and New Zealand''.   Sad

"At the moment, even if they [consumers] have a strong preference of buying Australian, they really can't be assured of the origin of it," Dr McKinna said.

I hate "packed in Australia from imported ingredients".

We have no idea where the ingredients come from and I for one like to know.

LOOPHOLES pansi there are always loopholes in everything we do..damnit..

like I say who really has the time to read everything on these labels..its another costing that gets passed down the chain.. presently I am watching sugar and sodium by the time I have found that I just want to get out of the place..

I am wondering how bloody big would the label have to be in some cases...lol..

protecting Australian made is a bit like throwing a couple of lifejackets at a sinking ship..

pansi it must come with age... but I am getting angrier and angrier at the supermarkets the big guys..the way we are being treated .. as a customer I feel unwelcome in Coles and woollie...first of all its the blasted trolley!!!!..then its the battle of the aisles..almost always got a loading ladder or even worse in them..

god help you if you want personal service at the deli...

if looks could freeze you then thats the place to go..

then theres getting out of the place all of a sudden it is coming home to me... they dont like us pansi..they really dont.,.

local woollies.. down to two check outs.. its all selfservice..how you go with a trolley load I will never know..why should we [usually mum] do what was their JOB.... SERVICE it was called..

my daughter says shop on line......I cant believe thats the answer if it is..then we deserve it thats for sure.

Does your daughter say shop online for groceries cods? I know people who do, busy business women, they swear by it....put the order in 24/7, everything's 24/7....remember when we worked for 8 hours, played for 8 hours and slept for 8 hours? I don't know online supermarket is right up my alley, but if it gets too bad I'll give it a try.

Apparently night fill is history, they do it through the day now and damn the shoppers. The customer used to be always right, not any more I can tell you.

I got my head bitten off by the owner of a shop a couple of weeks ago, huh! I only asked if they sold a particular item. I think I'll try that from now on, but I'll ask a stupid question and if I get a polite reply they get my business.....I love testing people.

I think you will eventually come round to online cods, might be all that we have in the not too distant future.

There probably could have been a way to keep the shops running in these changing times, but no one tried hard enough to convince us. They got too cocky with our money and they lost.

That's my boxing day gripe  Smiley

Me either....my lips are sealed.

Lips Sealed  Lips Sealed  Lips Sealed  Lips Sealed  Lips Sealed

The supermarkets don't want to pay penalty rates that's why they fill during normal business hours, don't worry about the aisles blocked up with pallets and ladders. Less jobs for the school kids now....sad.

but we are putting up with it.. are we not?

we are mad we really are.if we were only organised we could hold these shops to ransom.. treat us better or else.. they think bringing down the cost of a bottle of milk will do it..how cheap are we to buy off?

as it is I/you have to walk through about ten different aisles to get to the milk.even the cat food is more in your face..why do we let them treat us like this???...

why I am so riled up is because its getting worse..it wont be long and they will be charging us for using a checkout chick..

The two of you should start complaining to you local councils and send info to your state members and media as to have pallets in the isles that cause any impedance to the flow of the customers is an infringement against the fire laws. The isles must be clear for evacuation in case of an emergency and pallets of stock do not = safe.
