true MOTR....   Smiley

and I thought they had already exceeded recorded maximums in many places. Certainly Wagga has had major floods in the past, being on the Murrumbidgee,( hence the levee banks already in place) - but perhaps that was the projection??

we will see.

hmm...so...whats the Null hypothesis to Anthropocentric Global Warming? That weather events stay the same as in the past? That there is no change? that weather remains constant and the climate holds within 0.1 of a degree globally averaged for 100 years?

If any of these things ever did happen, it would be highly unusual! Climate changes, always did, always will.

(I won't bring up the burgess shale if you don't try the "rate of change argument!")

hey I'm with you.
Climate change is upon us.

Roll Eyes Deathray might take you up on rates of change tho.

And besides that ... the Null hypothesis to Anthropocentric Global Warming??
interesting  Smiley  you'll have some feral opponents about that,.!!

One poster in particular ( Roll Eyes) umm can't remember which one, will  get positively upset if you suggest humans have ANY ROLE AT ALL in current climate changes.! the vehemence of denial is quite fascinating, from an objective viewpoint. Smiley

I just wish we had the Prehistoric atmosphere of a constant 30C degrees at the equator and a constant 10C degrees at the poles with a hazy sky and 3 times the amount of oxygen which allowed giant lizards to hold their immense weight up and glide high in the sky.

Ahhh. Them were the days indeed. Wink

Of course climate changes, our ice ages are proof of this. Indeed it was through trying to understand these past changes that climate scientists worked out the critical role CO2 plays in these climate shifts. A slight temperature increase caused by an orbital forcing increases atmospheric CO2 which precipitates further temperature increases. It is why atmospheric CO2 generally lags temperature. There is no logic whatsoever to the argument that because climate changed in the past anthropogenic increases in atmospheric CO2 are not forcing current changes.

The reality is that our climate is changing very quickly. We have seen nothing like this for millenniums. If we line up the usual suspects, increasing atmospheric CO2 has its fingerprints all over this one. This climate change was predicted and has been proven by multiple lines of independent evidence. It is why 97% of climate scientists will tell you the origin of this change is anthropogenic.

Absolutely agree Motr.  I find that the deniers consider that humans are either;
- too unimportant to have such effects, or
- somehow are divorced from the earth, above it, like we don't REALLY live here, and therefore we can do anything we like, without consequences.!!.

Its like some holy belief.!!! I shake my head in amazement at the Folly.!!

It is a very powerful argument in the US bible belt, where to accept AGW is akin to denying God or the equivalent of trying to build the tower of babel.

I don't doubt it at all.

Some folk just deny it all together....... it really comes across as the basest stupidity.

It is as if we are exempt !! 'cos we believe in GOD.   ( not me tho) Wink,  or the same old same old..... its happened before..ie it's not our fault. we are innocent.!!  (whine whine)

Its like these monster tornadoes wiping out much of the US heartlands.!!
The reporters refer to the 'wrath of mother nature'.!  But they don't seem to wonder why?

two separate issues,

1: climate change (we all agree, the climates changing)
2: What's causing it (here lies the rub....)

MOTR, you had to say that the rate of change is different didn't you?
Can you prove this??

I say again, What's the null hypothesis? if we remove Co2 forcing from the climate models what do the models suggest? A constant average annual temperate with variation...of what??

Jalane, in my experience it's the AGW supporters who look more like religious zealots than even the US bible bashers,
Ian plimer got it right...AGW is the new religion

Now, don't be late again to sing hymns in the Church of Global Warming today.

It also would be totally inconvenient to say so too eh. Smiley

Cheesy neither is there any logic in assuming that current warming MUST be the result of human co2 emissions!

Models are models, I generate computer models in my work too, however I do this to find an appoximate answer, I don't start with the answer then adjust the model until it reflects what I believe to be true.

And 2.9% of scientists are in the pay pocket of the heartland institute (oil barrons, Auto makers)

..and the remaining 0.1% are undecided.
