Quote:Yes, I can see how the thought of this happening before in history would prove uncomfortable to the alarmists.
And given the age of the planet, do you honestly think this sort of thing hasn't happened before at any other time.
You are right. Ice sheets grow and shrink many times over the course of the Earth's history due to natural temperature decreases and increases. It's what causes Ice Ages and also the end of Ice Ages.
The last major Ice age that the Earth experience ended 10,000 years ago. In the northern hemisphere the ice sheet which is now confined to Greenland covered almost the whole of northern Europe. The whole of Great Britain, except the most southerly reaches of England, was covered in an ice sheet miles thick. Sea levels were so low that Britain was not an island but was actually joined to France (thank God it's not like that now).
Then, about 10,000 years ago, the Earth warmed up and, of course, the ice sheets melted and retreated to their current position in Greenland.
Now, what caused that period of Global Warming that ended the last ice age? I doubt that it was human activity and pollution considering that the earth's human population at the time numbered in just thousands, or maybe 1 or 2 million at the most.
It must have been NATURAL global warming which caused the ice sheets to retreat 10,000 years ago and there is every reason to assume that the current retreat in ice sheets, should it actually be happening, is also as a result of natural warming and not human activity.
When you mention the end of ice ages, and the entirely natural retreat of ice sheets, to the Global Warmists they find it a bit of An Inconvenient Truth (excuse the pun).
