The facebook page has 17,266  members.......

You should check out some of the media on it!!!

Well that is a bit closer to the actual Australian membership of getup.

I didn't think the numbers were very impressive at all....

And some of those members are not in agreeance with the getup idealogies!!!

so its ok that a group of 570.000 bitter individuals can organise a boycott of products produced by people who will be soundly affected by this TAX..

and by your own words have every right to protest... not threaten btw..

as we have seen by the march also organised by GETUP.. that some apparantly cant wait to be TAXED...I am sure GETUP will send the tax dept a list of their membership so they can be suitably charged.. a levy to save the planet..

in the mean time.. some companies could be sent to the wall with this boycott..it could be the case.. doesnt this seem a little out of proportion, to you?

Cods, I think you need to reconcile in your mind whether or not individuals are affected by this carbon tax.

Because at present you are having a bob each way in classic Abbott style.

you could be right... but I will need you to spell out why you think that Dr jolly... as I dont really think I am.. but will give you the benefit of the doubt as I am willing to learn.

what I am thinking regarding the power that GETUP seems to have is that they dont have a vested interest..GETUP i mean.. the members are people who believe in what the owner of this web believes in.... for instance the petition regarding the live cattle to Indonesia went out almost immediately...I had friends sending it to me.. so I signed it..no where did it say only 11 abattoirs were the problem..I was under the impression it was all of them over there..

now whether this petition had any affect on the govt doing what they did..
I dont know.. but if it did thats some power..its not individuals... its the fact that they GETUP have the power to make this govt change direction..

anyway neither here nor there... point me in the right direction and I will shut up. and think I am alone in the way I see things..

My understanding is that the owners of Getup website propose a topic and create a page for it. Then if that page attracts enough interest & donations, they buy advertising space with it.
They probably email their user list for each new topic.

So no one is forcing their user list to support all topics, and I'm sure many dont.  They seem to have started out centerist, but have moved left to combate the right wing activists of corporates like the mining council.

Also remember that most of GetUps members would be relatively young tech savvy indivduals, which probably influences their policies as young people seem very keen on the environment.

yes I am learning more about GETUP from being on here..and I am almost sure no one is forced thats not what I am implying..when they asked their member to bully their local members into pressuring the govt..[ my god I have forgotton what it was now]...but anyway they won.. the govt backed down.. they were cockahoop over it.

now thats power..there is a lot of talk on here about the media.. but not much about this mob..if this was an islamic mob... what do you think would happen????

not sure what I think the overall membership is made up with.. I find it amazing that people group together like this anyway... I guess i have never been a follow the leader type..

but I do not like the influence they have over the govt... I am sure the cattlemen or the mining or retail groups wishe they had that much influence..

also those groups have to buy advertising in the media to get their message across.. GETUP i notice doesnt have to do that.

they seem to have direct power over the govt

The reality is the Government has a disaster of its own making unfolding, their are millions of Australians refusing to compete in the work place and the market place - Global Financial Crises - people are resisting passively, people are refusing to play the states ideological game, people will not be forced to work in unsafe, insecure and substandard conditions deliberately engineered to make people compete and fight against each other to survive.

The Letter Getup are sending......

Dear CEO,
You may be aware that, as reported by Phillip Coorey in the Sydney Morning Herald on July 1 and July
2, the Australian Food and Grocery Council has reportedly put its support behind a multi-million dollar
campaign to fight proposed legislation to put a price on carbon pollution. As a result of this information
becoming public, many GetUp members have urged us to assist them in contacting companies such as
yours to express their concern at this news.
As such, it is our intention in the next few days to provide easy to use product information to our
membership such that they can boycott goods and services that are linked to the scare campaign that
the Australian Food and Grocery Council are about to sign up to.
As a member of the Australian Food and Grocery Council the public may see your company as being
supportive of the scare campaign that we expect will be launched in a fortnight. I understand that may
not actually be the case, which is why I’m writing to you today.
The total size of the proposed scare campaign of which the Australian Food and Grocery Council is
reportedly a part of is similar in size to the recent campaign by Big Tobacco. As we’ve seen with the
Big Tobacco campaign, industry groups often find it difficult to separate face from fiction.
With all major parties now supporting action on climate change, it is only a question of which is the
best way forward. Tony Abbott’s plan to provide tax payer money to polluting industries is not one the
Australian public will support. It will create long term budget deficits without reducing pollution to the
levels that will be required to avert dangerous climate change. The only viable option for Australia to
do its part in reducing our pollution is to price pollution and grow our clean energy economy.
GetUp! has more than 570,000 members across the country. Together we have campaigned on a range
of issues of concern to Australians. Recent examples include our campaign with the RSPCA and
Animals Australia that successfully sought an immediate moratorium on live exports to Indonesia. We
have also successfully partnered with groups like the Wilderness Society to pressure banks and
financial institutions into not supporting environmentally destructive investments.
We’re asking companies the below questions and we’ll inform our members and the Australian public
of the answers to these.
1. Do you accept the science of climate change?
2. Do you believe the Australian Government should take action to address climate change in the
cheapest and most effective way possible?
3. Do you support the proposed AFGC campaign against carbon pricing?
4. If you do not support the AFGC campaigning against carbon pricing will you immediately write
to the AFGC to inform them of your position and will you resign your membership from the
AFGC if they continue to provide material support to the proposed scare campaign?
Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. I urge you to provide a reply to
lily@getup.org.au by close of business on Wednesday 6th July 2011 so we can accurately inform our
members and the Australian public of your position.
Once again can I reiterate that we are asking for your assistance as we realise that not all companies
who are members of the Australian Food and Grocery Council are aware of or supportive of the
Council’s reported position on the issue of pricing carbon or of its plans to use your membership dues
in a scare campaign.
Yours Sincerely,
Simon Sheikh

Funny how they mention 'scare campaign'. Being gang-green stooges and climate change fearmongers, getup dont have any credibility to call anyones actions, a scare camapign.

Menzies House and the Stop Gillard’s Carbon Tax Coalition today thanked radical left wing activist group GetUp! for using their resources to provide a list of businesses that oppose the Gillard-Brown tax on carbon dioxide

Exactly. Thank heavens for ordinary Australians like Mario, the chef at the Lavenders, who continues to employ staff and serve quality HACCAP and Australian-Standards certified cuisine, when it is predicted that prices under the proposed carbon tax will raise across the board by over 100%.

These climate change fearmongers will continue to lie and stir things up while ordinary Australians get on with the job of making this country work.

They're NOT 'climate change' fearmongers...they're carbon tax 'fearmongers'....an entirely seperate issue...'ACTION' on climate change is radically different to 'helping' the government 'return to a surplus'..which is the point to the carbon tax...AND the ONLY point to it..

Hands up everyone gullible enough to think that ALL the tax money will be returned to the 'people' in compensation???

We refuse point blank to compete with other people for that which is already the fundamental human right of all people - the right to life.  Up yours Marxists, we will not compete, we will not give oxygen and energy to the states agenda.  Stuff your survival of the fittest BS.

Pretty much the same thing to me. If you cry out to get taxed for the purpose of climate change, then you are complicate with the fearmongers, but you are correct that I should have said carbon tax fearmongers.
