Relationships btwn neighbours

Woman's bones found in flat after 8 yrs - July 6, 2011

Skeletal remains believed to be those of an elderly woman last seen in 2003 have been found in an inner Sydney unit.

Police found the remains on the floor in an upstairs bedroom of the Surry Hills home on Tuesday at noon.

A relative of the elderly woman told police she had not been seen since 2003.

The remains have not been identified, but the death is not believed to have been suspicious.

The woman would have turned 87 in August, police say, and was recently reported missing by her sister-in-law who was married to the deceased lady's dead brother.

According to a Sydney Morning Herald report, the woman and the sister-in-law had argued in 2003 and had not seen each other since.

Neighbours interviewed by 2UE Radio said they always assumed the house was empty.

One resident of the street told 2UE that they hadn't seen the woman for 20 years, they believed the woman had gone to live with her brother in Rose Bay, in Sydney's East.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she did not know the woman who lived in the house.

"We saw her many years ago, but assumed she moved away," she said.

The neighbour added that she had last seen the woman about eight or nine years ago.

"We didn't know her and we don't think anyone knew her either."

This is just sad - and it is becoming increasingly commonplace...

Blame globalisation.

We're 'supposed to' worry ourselves sick with despair about starving kids in africa, but it comes at a cost - we don't care what happens to our neighbours.

Apart from that, too often people will assume things about their neighbours without even talking to them. Communication is the answer. It's a sad indictment on our society that so many people don't make the effort to communicate.

I don't think it's related to globalisation. People are just too busy with their lives these days.

We had new neighbours move in recently. We had an issue with a problem tree that drops gunk into our pool every year. We just had to raise the issue and it was fixed. We provide the chain saw and they provide the labour.

So sad and yet so true.

I always feel better knowing that I've visited my neighbours to say a quick hello.

Each and every time I've done so .. I've been told how much the visit has brightened up their day. A few times I've been asked if I could help them out in some way .. but you know .. the requests have been so simple and if anything .. they were a privilege for me to undertake.

The mere thought that one of my neighbours may NOT be ok really bothers me (to the point where I just have to make sure that they're ok).

For about the last 20 or so years that I know of, it's been relatively commonplace for the cops in Sydney to find people who have been dead in their homes for a few months or so. Those ones just don't make the news.

About 10 years ago they found a guy in Belmore who had been dead for over 15 years.

Aussie .. there have been many similar stories about neighbours over recent years. I'm not sure how/if these are able to be linked and re posted.
