Carbon mapping technology on the way

AN ADELAIDE-led consortium is developing technology which could generate global carbon dioxide maps.

Private company Vipac Engineers and Scientists is leading a consortium of universities and companies, including The Australian National University and Melbourne University, on a project to create ground based carbon dioxide monitors, for a tenth of the cost of current technology.

The consortium has received a $2.35 million Federal Government grant under the Australian Space Research Program to develop the technology over two years.

Andrew Clark from Vipac says the target is to develop an inexpensive ground based CO2 monitor, which can measure CO2 levels through a column o the atmosphere.

This information will then be used to calibrate data from satellites.

While satellites can detect CO2 levels in the atmosphere, the data they provide is easily distorted by water vapour and particulate mater in the air.

People who can't distinguish between etymology and entomology bug me in ways I cannot put into words.
