Liberal Stoush

You left me swinging: Joe to Tony

SIMMERING tensions between Joe Hockey and Tony Abbott boiled over in a telephone clash when the shadow treasurer accused the Opposition Leader of embarrassing him and leaving him ''swinging in the wind''.

Several sources from both camps have confirmed to The Sun-Herald a fiery conversation in which both called in to question the other's loyalties and political ideology. One senior Liberal called it a "brutal, free and frank character assessment of each other's beliefs and performance".

The stoush between the former leadership rivals - in the lead-up to the May 10 budget - erupted after Mr Hockey was forced to back away from his suggestion in a keynote speech that family trusts should be taxed in the same way as companies.

Mr Hockey was immediately slapped down by Nationals leader Warren Truss and members of the conservative Right, who have long opposed any change to family trust tax arrangements due to their popularity with rural heartland voters.

Mr Hockey was forced to make an embarrassing public retreat, but he soon called Mr Abbott, furious at his lack of support. It is understood he was angry that he had been "left swinging in the wind" and he repeatedly made it plain he believed the Coalition needed to have firm policy outlines instead of Mr Abbott's current "small target strategy".

According to the sources, it then descended into a slanging match before ending abruptly without resolution. A shadow cabinet supporter of Mr Hockey's said he was determined to stand by his belief that the Liberal Party "needs to stand for something going into the next election and if that means taking an unpopular stance or having to thrash it out with the Nationals, then so be it".

Mr Abbott's office had no comment while a spokesman from Mr Hockey did not respond. But a Coalition source said the matter had been overblown and claimed a conversation matching "those descriptive terms did not take place".

Former leader Malcolm Turnbull's controversial appearance on the ABC's Lateline last week, just hours after Mr Hockey's largely panned budget reply at the National Press Club, has forced Mr Abbott to hand down an official edict on discipline.

Last Thursday morning, Coalition MPs and senators received an email from chief opposition whip Warren Entsch warning against running commentary on internal party matters. He specifically ordered members not to discuss with media the comments Mr Turnbull made about his alternative views on the Coalition's carbon policy. Mr Turnbull took to his blog on Friday, claiming he did nothing but spruik the party line.

He has received a small measure of support within the party, including a text message from a prolific backbencher while he was on air. But Mr Turnbull has largely been criticised internally for creating a distraction from Labor's carbon tax struggle.

Presenting a UNITED FRONT?

Abbott-a-bad, Hockey, Turnbull, Truss & who else, at each others throats?

This is what some may call an in-elastic approach to policy and an elastic approach to self-interest?

The difference is Big Joe Hockey is a decent bloke with a good grasp of what he is doing, he is also a moderate doing his best under an extremist leader.
Abbott on the other hand is a self serving popularist whos only concern is for his own longevity in his political career and he will say and do anything to that end.
Far right extremists should never lead this country

No, that actually came from the Sydney Morning Herald, via sources that would have come from those involved in the stoush, the Liberals!

For goodness sake, Tony Abbott is NOT a far-right politician.

If you guys knew anything about the far right, you wouldn't even make such a comment.

David Duke, Nick Griffin, Jean Marie Le Pen, Franz Schoenhuber etc

These are far right politicians.

I was tempted to say, aren't they all!

However, we should never be without hope, so please let there be at least one person amongst all of those Politicians (and their helpers - Maqqa) who truely understands what he/she is there for, which is to represent the best, long term interests of all Australians!

It seems, it must still be too early in the morning, you have me confused with someone else!

I am someone who cares about Politicians, any Politician, as much as they care about me/us, which means I don't care for ANY OF THEM.

Or at least 99% of them, there must be 1 decent one, somewhere, surely?

Labor or Liberal, they are both the same and as for being hypocritical, you must be looking in the mirror!

I agree, these are the things that increase the Public distrust of Politicians, although I must admit that it would be very difficult to increase my distrust of Politicians, from all party's!

We are rational people in Australia, at least for the most part, and in the aussie political landscape, Abbott is most definitely far right.

It is not too late for the Libs to cut loose their loony far right spokesmen, and get back to the mainstream, because that is what aussies want.

Go Hockey, Go Turnbull, dump that cracker Abbott.

well the same has to go for those that vote for them under the skin we are all the same...I am amazed at the ones that vote because someone wants to Tax the rich man... or take something away from the richman..or really only has one agenda..

I mean some will vote just for someone who says they support Gay marriage.bizarre but at the end of the day..they are the very ones with the POWER.

you cant really blame the pollie for bowing to the minorities

Andrei,
Abbott-a-bad may not be as far right as Genghis Khan, but he is certainly well right of centre!

In the mold of Genghis Khan, the Conservatives under Abbott-a-bad or elsewhere around the world, present the worst of the bad options available to the long term Public good.

The Conservative ethos of Aus-terity is akin to a quote attributed to Genghis Khan which says, “It is not sufficient that I suceed - all others must fail.”

Conservatives need to understand that the Economic paradigm IS CHANGING and Politics will have to evolve with it or they will ultimately face extinction, just as Fossil Fuels did & will again and just like we humans will, unless we start some serious mitigation against the worst effects of Climate Change!

There is nothing wrong with being on the Right of politics.
I too hold Right wing views.

I believe in market economics, strong border control, cultural synergy and an interventionist military policy to protect our people.

Tony Abbott is not of the far right. To say so, it just either Australian ignorance of what far right is, or just plain mischievous.
