China would buy all of Australia's coal mines if it could - it has already tried. Coal still has a bright future around the sensible parts of the world.

Little Britain's 50 per cent plan for giant carbon cut makes ours look tiny

Malcolm Farr
May 18, 2011

...

*UK Conservatives approve 50 per cent carbon cut

*Australia's agrees to tiny five per cent cut by 2020

*Countries taking climate change seriously - Combet

BRITAIN'S Tory Prime Minister David Cameron has approved a savage reduction in carbon pollution which makes the Australian target look puny.

The British coalition government today agreed to a 50 per cent cut in emissions by 2025, and the plan has the backing of the nation's industry leaders.

In Australia there is a target agreed to by Labor and the Liberals for a five by 2020, and so far there is no government plan to achieve this.

Further, it is not possible to directly compare the economies and energy systems of the two countries.

However, Climate Change Minister Greg Combet didn't miss the opportunity and said today the British decision was "further evidence that countries around the world take climate change seriously''.

"The UK has been participating in emissions trading for nearly a decade and - in contrast to what (Opposition Leader) Tony Abbott would have you believe - the sky has not fallen,'' said Mr Combet.

Uhlmann - Brown interview continues....

BOB BROWN: I'm sorry...

CHRIS UHLMANN: ..available to you.

BOB BROWN: I'm sorry, Chris, Treasury has no intention to shut the industry down. it tends to- it tends...

CHRIS UHLMANN: No, but you do.

BOB BROWN: No, I'm not.

CHRIS UHLMANN: Didn't you say back in 2007 that we had to kick the coal habit?

BOB BROWN: No, I did not. You're looking at the Murdoch press, where I said back in 2007 we should look at coal exports with a view to phasing them out down the line.

CHRIS UHLMANN: It wasn't the Murdoch press, it was a comment piece that you wrote. So you want to phase out the coal industry?

BOB BROWN: The world is going to do that because it is causing massive economic damage down the line through the impact of climate change.

CHRIS UHLMANN: But the question-

BOB BROWN: No, let me...

CHRIS UHLMANN: The simple question is how do you replace $50 billion worth of export income?

BOB BROWN: You go to renewables over the coming decades and you do that by exporting... Look, Germany did this. It's closed its coal mine. It's closing its nuclear power stations. It's gone into exporting renewables - including using Australian technology...

CHRIS UHLMANN: And those jobs...

BOB BROWN: It's created 350,000 jobs and a multibillion dollar export industry and Australia- China's going to have as many solar panels by 2020 as the whole world has now, using, again, a mission of technologies, including those from Australia while this country is captivated by the old polluting industries which are making climate change worse.

Now, we can do much better than that. This is a resource rich country. We should follow 37 other countries, take some of the money from those resource riches, put it into a sovereign fund and make sure this country can be educated, wealthy and wise into the future.

CHRIS UHLMANN: We're going to have to leave it there, thank you.

BOB BROWN: Thanks, Chris.

Well i think Bob Browns words do that. Does he say that he would like to see a phase out of coal while being replaced with other industries?
or does he say he wants the coal industry shut down tomorrow and is happy to see 50b dollars dissappear with it?

In a broader sense, the world is trying to move towards being carbon neutral. Unless the consumption of coal can be worked into that aim, than the world is trying to phase out coal.

Am i mistaken in my interpretation?

COAL IS going........ get used to the world turning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get used to it old people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear, poor Bumbling Bob is having a bad week.. Smiley

"A major meltdown by Greens leader Bob Brown at his press conference this morning. His obsession and anger with “the Murdoch press” is unnerving. But he also lashed out at - or treated with disdain - Chris Uhlmann of the ABC, Andrew Probyn of the West Australian and..."

Well if the big miners he is talking about are majority overseas owned, than some of that money would be heading overseas.
I don't know about 'allot of that money', thats entirely relative.
Watch the rest of the interview to gain a better understanding of what Bob Brown was trying to say.

Quote:

jame-e, what do you mean by "carbon neutral" ?

Exactly what carbon neutral means. To me it means Trying to ensure our consumption does not add to the current volume of co2 in the atmosphere. And possibly in time trying to lower that volume.
Maybe i underestimated, maybe the ultimate goal is to totally remove all anthropogenic carbon emissions, but i doubt it.

Even given your distortion in quoting:
So you believe china to be sensible then? They are currently/will be trialing carbon trading schemes in various parts of their country.
They have also clearly demonstrated an understanding that they need to alter their practices. In part due to the fact that they have severely depleted and poisoned their country, in part due to the possibility that they may infact be sensible.
Do you somehow think that Bob Brown is unaware of the obvious? that people will continue to want and consume coal regardless of what he thinks or Australia does?

NO ONE can deny the illigitimacy of
"The Australian's"
- so called -
UteGate
campaign, in
"cahoots"
with
Malcolm Turnbull
, in attempt to politically assassinate an elected Prime Minister

FAKE emails
(supplied by
Turnnbull
) and all

A DISGRACEFUL episode in this country's history

Turnbull could have been PM, now, if he were not SO seduced by Rupert Murdoch (in the desert)

So I GUESS
i

Brown ....

... is CORRECT - in his assessment

Actually, Buzz...I've been thinking that Turnbull was more co-target than co-conspirator in the Ute-gate campaign...

The religious-righteous tools in the Lib machine - in cahoots with the media - was attempting to politically-assassinate Turnbull, whilst ostensibly-targetting Rudd...
