CHRIS UHLMANN: We're joined in the studio by Greens leader Bob Brown, welcome to 7:30.
BOB BROWN, GREENS LEADER: Hi, Chris.
CHRIS UHLMANN: Did you force the Prime Minister into a carbon tax?
BOB BROWN: No. We did make clear that we had the Garnaut prescription for a tax and then a...
CHRIS UHLMANN: That was one year followed by a trading scheme?
BOB BROWN: That's right. Well, no, it wasn't one year it was a period but we went to the election with that prescription. We then made an agreement with the Prime Minister to set up a committee to look at that and be informed by experts and out of that committee has come the prescription that we, or the framework, we now know about.
CHRIS UHLMANN: Sure but she says she had her heart set on a carbon market and now she's been forced into a carbon tax and if you didn't force her and Independents didn't force her and she wants one, why don't we have one?
BOB BROWN: She's getting a carbon market. There's a tax on the way to a carbon market.
CHRIS UHLMANN: Three to five years.
BOB BROWN: That's right.
CHRIS UHLMANN: There is a review after that so there may not ever be a carbon market.
BOB BROWN: Everybody's agreed a carbon market is where we're aiming. We have always said that ourselves, Christine Milne's been very strong on that. We'll hopefully dove-tail into a world which has got an international market going and Australia will be a leader in establishing that international climate for reducing carbon.
CHRIS UHLMANN: Sure, I understand what it would do but can you understand why people might be a bit bemused if the Prime Minister says she's been forceded into a carbon tax that might go five years or longer because it's going to be reviewed and you weren't happy to have a carbon market - the Independents were happy to have a carbon market and she was too, so who forced her into having a tax up front?
BOB BROWN: I don't know. You'll have to ask her about this.
CHRIS UHLMANN: I have.
BOB BROWN: Is this the issue?
CHRIS UHLMANN: I think it is, yes.
BOB BROWN: Is it for you but for us it's getting our great country of ours into an economically responsible trajectory for an age of environmental economic wellbeing. The German Government has just pointed out this week that they are going to take the lead here, they're not going to allow Obama to overtake them because their legislation in this area seven years ago has created 250,000 jobs and that will be 900,000 jobs by 2030 and they want to stay in front.
CHRIS UHLMANN: We can come to that in a moment. The point here is the Prime Minister made a very big play before the election was held about there not being a tax. There is now a tax. Might go three to five years. She says she's been forced into that position. I'm trying to establish who forced her.
BOB BROWN: I have been to no committee meetings with a thumb screw.
CHRIS UHLMANN: It wasn't you is the short story?
