some people are PRACTICALLY minded in fact the vast majority of people are PRACTICALLY minded and are more interested in things immediate to themselves than the broader world around them and see a degree as a ticket to get a job which is perfectly understandable

theres a lot of people who would like to skip the four years of bullsh!t altogether and just get their careers on with but theres a lot of employers out there who wont let them unless theyve got a diploma indicating theyve learned some vague crap about boongs in their huts sh!tting on each other for 40,000 years

plus what exactly did you learn during your education mate you seem pretty stupid and not particularly knowledgeable to me?

Well considering you dont know me cliff , that's a pretty big call to make.

Now if you had gone and got yourself a university education you mightnt have made such a grossly uninformed comment without much evidence and proof.

Now as to your point about everyone being different , I agree with you.

Some people ARE more practically minded.

Some people are academically minded.

Some people ( I'm hinting at you here cliffy) are simple minded.

But ALL of those people would be much better , well rounded individuals if they knew about other things other than their particular occupations skill set.

In all seriousness, I really don't think that ones political leanings has anything to do with educational achievement.

In all seriousness I cant believe you think that. if you are talking about your PERSONAL leanings then yes, you are correct b ut not if you are referring to the educators themselves. students are flooding to the private sectors in large part because ot the political ideology (left-wing) of public schools.

BULLSH!T private(religious) education is getting flooded by students because of the perception of better discipline & better morals.
It's why I spend nearly 12K a year, nothing to do with "Leftie" educators more to do with the fact that disruptive students rule the roost to the detriment of all others.

and they rule the roost because leftie doctrine throws out discipline or personal responsibility. Private schools teach and demand both.  Thats just one example.

Nope, Arts degree are some pples only avenue into university and better ed thus life your assumption is flawed and I take offense as I am former B Arts student myself. One does usually have to know exaclty what they attempting to achieve if they take on such a degree usually its only stepping stone to straight degree in what ever field!.

Degrees like communications, philosophy, sociology, art history etc are not worth the paper they are printed on.  They are just an excuse for people to live the uni life and avoid getting a job for a few years.

A place I worked for used to look for people with degres for entry level positions (usually paying around $60-70k). They weren't at all fussy about what kind of degree it was.

The reasoning was that they got people who could communicate effectively.

Yeah, who cares for learning about the history of ideas in the West. It's all rubbish. John S. Mill was just a douche who had a nervous breakdown; who cares for his utilitarianism and ideas on liberty which underpins most political discourse in this country.

What we need is history and the foundations of Western thought taught by Paris Hilton and 2Pac. I am sure they can understand, re-present, and write about history and ideas just as good as Plato, Aristotle, and Kant.

Society needs doctors, scientists, engineers etc.

Society could survive quite well without people sitting round discussing what they think some 16th century stoner meant when he jotted down some drug-addled musings about life.

If you're interested, study it as a hobby, but let's not pretend it's an indispensable and valuable career choice.

So you're not for learning about the history and foundations of Western thought?

fascinating stuff

Freud and far-leftist zealots whining about the bigoted remarks from righties do make up a portion of the lecturers, yes. However, reducing the Arts to that is a reduction to the absurd.

Never went to Uni. Had a Sister who did and Duxed it.
I haunted Libraries instead at an age long before one goes to Uni to learn how to 'Research'. Wink "Boo!"
I learned much indeed and implemented it all with all the Life Experiences I got from working Job to Job, place to place. Throw in mad-house Socialising and all things 'relationship' and it eventually all makes sense come 30 years of age.

Art: Well I must say, that the Uni Art is second rate compared to the TAFE Art. When I did a SignWriting course, there were a few Uni converts over to the Technical side of the force.
Why?
Well it seems that the Uni Art courses just offer 80% Theory and 20% Practical, while TAFE offered 80% Practical and 20% Theory which really mattered when it came to actually doing the Artwork itself. Besides the fact that many 'Deaf' people do Art courses because they tend to be more 'visually aware' than normal people, a lot of kids straight out of High School percieved themselves as "Losers/Failures" because they were going to TAFE and not Uni Sad . Sad to see this and I often had to convince them that although they were not 'Smart' for Uni, they were definately 'Clever' enough to be successful.

University is established, via Religion, upon 'paperwork' more than anything. Also, although the Degree in question may not have anything to do with the Job at hand - it proves to an Employer that this person has gone through a 'process' which offers more than what someone has got just via the HSC.

If you can afford it: Learn your Children as to which one is Clever, which one is Smart, and wether they are Breeders or Achievers. No good sending a son to a prestigiously expensive School/Uni if he is nothing but a ladies man who is only interested in Sex and having 7 kids.

Funny thing about TAFE is that it is 90% cheaper and still gets you a career that earns more than a lot of Uni orientated careers.

Also, Australia is the world leader in Commercial Diving Academies having the Top 3.
Hobart ...Fremantle ...and Albury (not kidding).
They are considered around the world in quality as what is reserved for Harvard/Yale or Oxford/Cambridge.
Something to be proud of. Cool

Seriously, this thread is ridiculous.

So many comments, so out of touch with the thoughts of, and realities faced by, so many students, graduates and job seekers alike.

Arts degrees lost their value when they started to make them 'relevant' - which is just another word for 'faddish'.
Students are fed the 'latest' theory - because that's the only thing most of their lecturers and tutors know.

Bingo.

It's just another display of the rife anti-intellectualism that prevails in Australia.

MIDDLETON'S ROUSEABOUT
by Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922)

Tall and feckled and sandy,
  Face of a country lout;
This was the picture of Andy,
  Middleton's Rouseabout.

Type of a coming nation,
  In the land of cattle and sheep,
Worked on Middleton's station,
  "Pound a week and his keep".

On Middleton's wide dominions
  Plied the stockwhip an' shears;
Hadn't any opinions,
  Hadn't any "idears".

Swiftly the years went over,
  Liquor and drouth prevailed;
Middleton went as a drover,
  After his station had failed.

Type of a careless nation,
  Men who are soon played out,
Middleton was - and his station
  Was bought by the Rouseabout.

Flourishing beard and sandy,
  Tall and robust and stout;
This is the picture of Andy,
  Middleton's Rouseabout.

Now on his own dominions
  Works with his overseers;
Hasn't any opinions,
  Hasn't any "idears".

Times have changed. Nowadays people have lots of opinions but most still haven't any 'idears'.

PUBLIC schools across Sydney are experiencing a "white flight" of students.
Anglo-Australian parents are choosing to enrol their children in private schools over public because there are less children from migrant backgrounds, a new report by the University of Technology Sydney, based on data from the My School website, claims.

The western suburbs has the lowest number of Anglo-Australian students, accounting for as little as 2 per cent of enrolments in some schools.

Most of the Cities, especially Sydney & Melbourne are becoming 'White' or Anglo minority ...but then again, who would bother to live in such dumps (Prisons)?
We all know Asians are most at Home in Cities, they even have 'China-Towns' within them just to prove the point over any other race. All happy little yellow Citi-Zens Grin

...as for your Poem Soren. Really good (again). Kinda sums up Australia's "Political" future though. Even now the Cops are fighting a loosing battle against the Alcohol that THEY introduced to the country 200 years ago. James Squire anyone? Cheesy

Lucky the Australian Art Industry (The Modern/Computer orientated, not the Celebrity/Televisual/Traditional "Arty-Farty" Archibald/Black Skivy type) is becoming our leading Industry and is being recognised as such by the International Community.
