WINE - on LINUX, that is interesting

I rarely use Windows 7 anymore, as I prefer my Linux Mint 10 Operating System, which is very easy, and user friendly, for someone like myself, who has only ever used Windows until now.
I have trialled a few linux OS's and found this Mint 10 to be the best for me by far, however the video conversion software available to linux is nowhere near as user friendly as the Windows compatible software like ConvertX or Nero, in fact the only time I boot into Windows now, is when I do want to convert and burn an AVI to disc.

Cool. I trialed Linux Mint when it was based on an Ubuntu distro and I liked it then. Now I understand that it's totally stand-alone and with much fewer overheads - and it's pretty fast as a result.

I use imgburn (on Wine) to produce an ISO on the desktop or wherever and Braseiro to burn it because imgburn doesn't recognise the Linux drives.

I have a portable hard-drive which occasionally develops errors and I have to fix it using chkdsk on a Windows machine.  One of these days I should transfer everything and change the format from ntfs to linux ext3 or fat3 so that I don't have to do that. It's a 1 Tb drive so I've been putting off doing that.

i just had a look at;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software)

I currently use a dual boot Win98SE/XP system [on a Desktop platform].

I have previously used XP, exclusively, for more than 12 months, but went back to booting Win98SE [which i much prefer].

These days I only use XP to get my digital cam pics onto my pooter, and to access, and backup data to 2 external 1 Tb drives.

All of my o/s partitions are FAT32 [i found a fix for the FAT32 137 gig data limit with Win98SE].
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/78592-enable48bitlba-break-the-137gb-barrier/

A replacement of the Win98se IDE driver ESDI_506.PDR driver, fixes the FAT32 137 gig data limit problem.
The patch file is available here...
http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#9SU
search for,
"Unofficial Windows 98 SE 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing) > 137 GB (E)IDE/ATAPI Hard Disk Driver ESDI_506.PDR 4.10.2225 Fix:"

Working within the limits of Win98SE, I must keep all of my partitions less than 127 gig,
....but i can use new, large, 500 gig SATA or IDE drives without any problem.

My only problem is that though my o/s runs OK, i can't replace my current hardware.
[Modern m/board video drivers don't support Win98SE  Cry  ]

And another problem which is looming is that....although i can still run my Win 3.11 software on either Win98SE or XP, a friend who has recently bought a new notebook with Win7, tells me that Win7 won't run his Win 3.11 app's [some of the same app's i have].

I can't upgrade my [business related, and 'other'] s/ware, as the s/ware co's don't exist any more.

Its tempting to perhaps try a Linux o/s with WINE, and, if it works out, i would be able to finally break any future dependence on future Microsoft O/S's.

I'll have to look into it.

You may find that there is already some software on Linux that works pretty well for your needs, and a lot of databases will import directly.

There are also ways of converting your Outlook address Books and messages to Thunderbird for example.

If you do convert (no religious overtones lol) you will find that your system works much much faster than with Windows XP.

One word of caution though - don't expect everything that works on Windows to work on Wine. It only works on very basic Windows applications, although it is getting better.

The upside is that you'll never have to worry about viruses and  software nag screens etc.

There are regular updates, some of which can be quite big, but it's no disaster if you don't accept the upgrades.

There are also some very good distros that work well on older computers.

Linux Mint is good if you're used to Windows. I quite like OpenSuse and Fedora too, but for me, the Ubuntu distributions are the most comprehensive by far.

I just noticed my typo. I meant fat32 of course.
