Free video conversion software

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/video-converter/

If you ever want to convert video files from one file format to another, then a video program like this is what you need, but most of the decent ones are quite expensive.
This program usually costs $40, but you can download it free for the next 19 hours or so, and then the free offer will be over.

You would need to download, and "unzip" the files, I use 7Zip, a free file compression program, but WinRar, or any other will do.
You then need to install the program, before the free offer runs out.

These programs are great for converting videos to watch on Ipods etc, or if you get AVI files it will convert those as well, so you can burn them to DVD's if you want.

So, anyone who needs a decent video conversion software program could do a lot worse than grabbing this, while it is free.

I just installed this, and I did not need to unzip it, I just saved the file to My Documents/Downloads, and ran the Setup.exe file, and it installed fine, and then I just registered it in my name with the free license key supplied, easy peasy.
It looks good, I have used a lot of different video programs, and some are better than others, but this looks pretty decent, and the price is right. Wink

The best one I've found for burning avi's etc to a DVD is imgburn. It's free so I can't be accused of commercialism.

It's designed for Windows, but I use it on Linux to create ISO's, then I burn direct to DVD using other software.

It makes more sense to have movies as mp4 (etc) files anyway because they take up less room.

This program is basically one for converting videos for use on portable devices, where size is a big issue.
It has heaps of device specific conversion options, for say an Ipod, or Ipad, or many of the various "smart" phones, which let's you convert a 4Gb movie down to say 250Mb version to play on your Ipad, while retaining very good quality.

For conversion of normal AVI's to DVD I use either ConvertXDVD, or NeroVision, but both of those are expensive to buy.

This free offer only has about 6 or 7 hours to go.

I rarely use Windows 7 anymore, as I prefer my Linux Mint 10 Operating System, which is very easy, and user friendly, for someone like myself, who has only ever used Windows until now.
I have trialled a few linux OS's and found this Mint 10 to be the best for me by far, however the video conversion software available to linux is nowhere near as user friendly as the Windows compatible software like ConvertX or Nero, in fact the only time I boot into Windows now, is when I do want to convert and burn an AVI to disc.

Cool. I trialed Linux Mint when it was based on an Ubuntu distro and I liked it then. Now I understand that it's totally stand-alone and with much fewer overheads - and it's pretty fast as a result.

I use imgburn (on Wine) to produce an ISO on the desktop or wherever and Braseiro to burn it because imgburn doesn't recognise the Linux drives.

I have a portable hard-drive which occasionally develops errors and I have to fix it using chkdsk on a Windows machine.  One of these days I should transfer everything and change the format from ntfs to linux ext3 or fat3 so that I don't have to do that. It's a 1 Tb drive so I've been putting off doing that.

I use 'Super-C', and 'Any Video Converter'.

Both freeware, and both work very well.

They will also rip audio from music clips and convert
to mp3 and other formats.

For joining videos, I use 'Free Video Joiner'.

It is also freeware, and also works very well.

It will also convert videos as it joins them.

I find that video converter programs promise much & deliver little.
I have never managed yet to convert a bunch of youtube videos
& burn them onto a DVD that would actually play in any DVD player for a TV.
There would always be something wrong.
Good luck to anyone who can as there are 1001 different formats.

I was thinking about just the same stuff these days. You describe the way it is. In a symphony orchestra, basically you spend half of your time trying to be a great sound amplifier. It is a great craft, but not such an artistic storytelling job. But anyhow, when you accept the symphony job, you have to provide the (good solid) sound thats needed in the context of the big hall, no artistic excuses possible. The jazz artists focusses on storytelling and let the amps do the sound production job. Or am I missing your point Sonic Soldier is really a nice way to describe it .

Try aone-soft converter, it converts not only videos but also music. It's very user friendly, can convert any youtube video to almost any format.

'TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works' is also very good, but is not free.

I've had good results from it, when others have been found wanting.

There is, however, a free version, although it's no-where near as comprehensive.

***A WARNING....***

If you use the K-Lite Codec Pack, do NOT use Super C converter, as these two
programs have issues with each other, and you WILL have problems.
