A 300-kilowatt solar farm is expected to start operating in Carnarvon in six months, with construction on the project starting today.

Energy Made Clean Solar is building the $3.4 million facility which will feed energy directly into Carnarvon's power grid.

The company's business development manager, Alannah MacTiernan, says the project would not have been possible without $1.7 million worth of funding from the Federal Government.

"The grant was absolutely necessary to make this a bankable project," she said.

"The long-term aspiration is that within five years or so is to have solar projects being able to stand on their own two feet but if we're going to get to that space we're going to need government help."

I saw this in the paper today, and did some quick sums.

300kw for $3.4 million = $11333 per kw.

Anyone seen the current price on home solar systems lately?  They're about double the capacity for half the cost....so what's the point of this vast monstrosity?  Why not just buy a 3kw sysytem for 100 homes at a fraction of the cost, or reinstate higher rebates?

You'd think there'd have to be a reason....  Wink

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

Aha! silly me...the answer was staring me right in the face all along!  A former pollie is involved, so obviously a few strings were pulled to give her company a leg-up at the expense of the taxpayer.

Did you base that on the TOTAL cost of the domestic roof top installation? That is including the government subsidy?

It still is cheaper but not as much as you portray

remember large scale power inverters are specialist products that cost more to construct

solar Thermal plants is currently very economical on a large production scale
