Victoria's Labor leader joins push for gay marriage

Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews has thrown his support behind same-sex marriage, becoming the fourth state Labor leader to back the issue.

The Labor Party will discuss same-sex marriage at its national conference in December, despite Prime Minister Julia Gillard stating she does not support the move.

But Mr Andrews told ABC TV's 7.30 Victoria there is increasing community support for it.

"I, like a growing number of Victorians, believe that it's unfair that same-sex couples in Victoria - indeed right across Australia - are not able to exercise the option," he said.

"The Commonwealth Marriage Act obviously is a Federal act, I think that a growing number of Victorians and Australians are coming to the view that this is unfair."

Gay rights groups say Ms Gillard's opposition is growing increasingly untenable.

Alex Greenwich from Australian Marriage Equality says Mr Andrews' position puts pressure on the Prime Minister ahead of the Labor Party's conference.

"It shows that these ALP state leaders understand and have identified that this is an issue that is important, important for the Labor party, important for their constituents and important for all Australians who believe in a sense of equality and a fair go," he said.

The Greens dont believe in human equality they have signed on to disability welfare cuts and the use of force against them to force them to work. Except for HIV of course - check it out - HIV patients have been included in the new National Disability Insurance Scheme - what a Joke. Just another self interest Lobby Group robbing this country.

Are you implying woody, that the Greens don't want to see the disabled helped back into a fulfilling employment situation, where it'a at all possible? That's what it sounds like.
What a disgraceful attitude that would be.
Nobody I'm sure wants to see anybody harassed into trying to do something which is just impractical, but where it is possible no effort or expense should be spared in trying to achieve an outcome.

The Greens negotiated the NDSI Scam all for HIV and signed on to the NDSI to kick non Homo sexual people off the DSP and keep HIV+ people on it. HV is not a disability it is an illness caused by behavioral choice that can be managed effectively.

The Greens sign on with labour and the coalition to cull the disabled and take the productivity savings for themselves...
