KEVIN Rudd has defied Labor colleagues who want him to end his damaging commentary on his time as prime minister, declaring he will speak out when he chooses to "correct the record".
As Julia Gillard laughed off suggestions Mr Rudd wanted his old job back, the former prime minister defended his decision to go public on cabinet divisions over his emissions trading scheme.
“As the former prime minister I will speak as appropriate to make sure the record is straight,” Mr Rudd said in Brisbane outside a forum for foreign diplomats.
“In the period that I was prime minister, it's no secret that there was a diversity of views on this matter when we got to this period last year.
“I don't propose to elaborate on it.”
Mr Rudd refused to confirm that it was Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Treasurer Wayne Swan who had pressured him to shelve his emissions trading scheme last year, as he told caucus on his last day as leader.
“I will always act as appropriate to correct the record,” Mr Rudd said.
Earlier, Ms Gillard said she was yet to speak to Mr Rudd since his controversial appearance on Monday's Q&A show, where he confirmed members of his cabinet wanted his ETS “killed off”.
She laughed off suggestions Mr Rudd was making a second run at the prime ministership, and said she didn't speak to cabinet colleagues every time there was a “media flurry”.
“I know there has been a lot of media reporting of Kevin appearing on Q&A. What I think has got less reporting is that on that show Kevin was making the same points that as a government we are making all around the country,” she told ABC radio in Brisbane.
“That is that we have to get on with a big reform agenda, and no bigger reform than pricing carbon.”
Ms Gillard again refused to say whether she had argued, while deputy prime minister, for Mr Rudd's emissions trading scheme to be dumped - a decision that fatally wounded the former prime minister.
“I am consistently on the public record as saying I don't believe in talking about confidential discussions between cabinet colleagues,” she said.
