Carbon tax winning voters but conditions attached

TWO-THIRDS of voters say they support a carbon tax if all the revenue is spent on compensation for households and business, according to a new Galaxy Poll.

The poll of 1036 people to be released today was commissioned by the Greens and reveals surprisingly strong support for the model being negotiated by the Gillard Government, the Greens and independent MPs.

Women, families and higher-income earners were the strongest supporters.

The poll, conducted a fortnight ago, found 66 per cent of voters in favour, 23 per cent were opposed and 10 per cent had no opinion.

People were asked if they supported or opposed a price on carbon that would tax the biggest polluting industries and return all the money to compensate households and business and provide investment in climate change schemes such as renewable energy.

Greens deputy leader Christine Milne said

Galaxy's specific question showed people had seen through Tony Abbott's scare campaign.

"Australians clearly recognise that building a cleaner, healthier economy means we need to put a price on pollution and make clean, renewable energy cheaper rather than prop up the old polluting economy," Senator Milne said.

Galaxy found 70 per cent of women supported the plan compared with 62 per cent of men and seven out of 10 people earning over $70,000 were in favour compared with just over six out of 10 people earning less than that amount.

In Victoria 64 per cent of people were in favour while

70 per cent of people with children backed it compared with 64 per cent support among those without.

The Government need to continually DRIVE HOME the compensation aspect

its getting more and more hilarious by the day.

if this stupid woman had any idea what she was doing we would know exactly what this Carbon tax would be and how much each and everyone of us would be getting and more to the point....................

WHAT GOOD IT WILL DO!

if my elecricity bill is going to go up by $5 per week.and the govt gives me $5 perweek to pay for it...why would I use less?

and I was under the impression that was the whole idea.

oh well it changes just about everyday and now we are expected to take notice of a galaxy poll..groooooooooooooooan!

plant will be forced to buy carbon credits from the

RENEWABLE ENERGY

producers - making investment in this area even MORE lucrative

This just shows how stupid people really are. Tax me but make sure it all comes back = no tax just cost, expense to the tax revenue by having to monitor the tax, expense to business to comply.

This is just stupid.

What incentive is the 'polluters' going to receive to change their 'polluting' ways if all they do is pass on the charges?
Someone throw me a bone here!
This situation does not pass the common sense test.

The ETS is market-based, meaning while there is initial pass on it won't be able to continue and if the company does, it will simply price itself out of the market. It's not a tax; it's a trading scheme.
Plus the initial pass on would occur with the Carbon Tax - not the ETS, because the initial compensation and rises that were talked about in 09 with the previous ETS scheme were to do with adjusting to the scheme. In this case, the carbon tax would already adjust the market to paying for carbon so unless consumers listen to the wrong people as we did with the MRRT, there won't be any increases in cost.

I also do not understand who will be measuring this carbon emmission...to see that it has been reduced... will each and every plant that is hit with this tax have a little emmission measurer sitting outside well measuring I guess... how do they tell the difference between steam and crap?..

I dont know any of this I really dont..why do I feel its mostly guesswork?

Carbon taxes have been in place in MANY economies - for MANY years
Much of the remainder are already in the development stage of introducing one

It is the stupidest thing imaginable. It doesn't help global warming. It doesn't apply to imported goods using carbon - so it serves only to harm AUstralian industry. Compensation means that behaviour is not changed.
It just doesn't have anything going for it - except that it is a GESTURE. But of course - for it's supporters nothing matters more than to be SEEN to be making a gesture.
However, the majority of people are giving it an entirely different, two-fingered gesture. Good on them.
