The Nationals Split On Carbon Pricing
Apr 3rd, 2011 at 5:48pm

The West Australian National Party has left open the possibility of supporting a market-based carbon price with the issue still on the table.

At the WA National Party's annual conference in Carnarvon on Saturday, a motion was put forward that the party gives in principle support to the introduction of a market-based carbon price.

President Colin Holt said the conference decided to refer it to the state executive who would discuss it further in about three weeks.

"We've decided to lay it on the table and we'll deal with it when we get a bit more information," Mr Holt told AAP on Sunday.

The decision opens up the possibility for the WA Nationals to further distance themselves from the federal Nationals who are vehemently opposed to Prime Minister Julia Gillard's proposed carbon price.

The WA Nationals' only federal MP Tony Crook said although he would be influenced by the party's decision he was wary of the possible adverse impacts on regional areas.

The coalition has been toying with this sort of things from the very beginning. Turnbull was on the right side. They can't hang onto the same policy for decades in the face of mounting evidence and increasing public support. It was Howard's undoing and will probably be Abbott's.
