It seems to me that as usual, those on the far right seem to take an almost unimaginably simplistic interpretation onto any event they focus on, and while they can often fairly accuse those on the left, of looking through the world through rose coloured glasses, I have to say that the black and white view they have of things is at least, if not more, distorted than even the most idealistic leftie.
They seem oblivious to the fact that the number of people seeking refuge, is not static, but fluid, number, and it changes with the circumstances of the day. It is almost always a reflection of the massive trauma associated with either war, or massive political unrest where concerns about safety are a massive factor, or in the aftermath of such a conflict, when the society they had been a part of has been so totally disrupted, or destroyed, that to stay on means suffering terrible deprivations, while to seek asylum means hope.
While countries can make themselves less attractive destinations for such desperate asylum seekers, to do so they have to implement policies that are so cruel that they make the idea of attempting to gain asylum there, a worse choice than suffering the depredations of waiting in a refugee camp for years.
So just comparing statistics between one governments period in office, and another, can never tell you the whole story, and those who make that attempt are very often the same ones who will advocate we adopt far crueler, less humane policies, for dealing with asylum seekers, because in their black and white world, they do not even think of them as people, just as a problem, to try and palm off onto somebody else. I prefer my rose coloured view of the world, if the alternative requires dehumanising those in such very real need.
