You can be better off without increasing your consumption of everything. The whole point of a carbon tax is it targets those products with a high greenhouse footprint. Products with a low footprint will end up being more affordable.
That of course assumes ALL products are from Australia. Remember that the tax only affects companies in Australia.
An apple from China has a bigger carbon footprint given the distance it has to travel to get to your table
So if "affordable" is your marker as "better off" then you'll buy overseas products ie destroying local industries
I think it would be better to use the revenue to lower other taxes rather than offer handouts. That way the cost of production will lower if necessary.
You cannot buy your electricity from overseas suppliers.
You can buy your petrol from overseas suppliers, but my understanding is that they will be taxed equally.
The fuel consumed in transporting foreign goods to and within Australia should be taxed. In this way an emissions tax will actually promote local consumption. This is also a great way to encourage an international agreement. We can agree to split the tax charged on international travel with the other destination country, provided they set up a similar emissions tax.
'Trade exposed' industries will be specifically protected under labor's scheme. If the tax is only domestic, I think we should go so far as to give an exemption to aluminium smelters and put an equalisation tax on all aluminium, including imports.
Quote:of course you are right maqqa but dont expect anyone that has been blinded into think this stupid TAX will fix climate warming..lol.
Cods, see my earlier post. This is the most fundamental lesson in economics, and the global warming deniers cant even get this right.
