Predicting a local weather event and analysing general climate conditions in a specific region of the planet are two very different animals.

AGW Denialists like to cherry pick data to suit their propaganda based and fossil fuel industry funded models

Take for example the classic CHOPPED graph that shows a correlation between cyclical sun spot activity and global warming trends
...

And why does the graph mysteriously stop at around 1980? Well let's take a look at the rest of the data folks.
...

Oh dear there seems to be an upward global warming trend after 1980 but the solar radiation variation curve just doesn't match. We will have to just leave it out. Nobody will notice in the mass media. It's not as if we are publishing the first propaganda graph in a peer reviewed scientific journal

Quantum physics has what bearing on climate science?

The statistical aggregation of weather measurements is the climate. That is all it is. A rainy climate is one where you have to take a umbrella with you in the morning more often.

The graph is technically incorrect.... ok, it's entirely incorrect. For one thing, it implies that none of the water vapour is due to human activities.

If water vapour accounted for 95% of the greenhouse effect, that would imply a climate sensitivity of 19. If that were the case, we'd really be in trouble because the earth would be warming approximately six times faster than it would with the generally accepted figure of 3.

Dare I ask for the reference?

Let me guess:

Glad you cleared that up

Obviously you lack a basic scientific grounding or training

(Do you know what changes in average global temperature is required in order to trigger an ice age or indeed a major ice melt phase on the earth? - didnt think so. If we burnt ALL the known fossil fuel reserves in the earths crust how much of the atmospheric molecular oxygen content will be consumed? Both of these question are high school level chemistry and phsyics questions. 5 marks each you have 30 minutes)

Isn't the answer to how much "how much of the atmospheric molecular oxygen content will be consumed?" pretty much zero?? since Co2 is consumed by plants to PRODUCE oxygen....

After all, isn't the equation sort of 'more Co2 = more plants and MORE plants = more O2 produced???'

Unless of course you're using the 'AGW' formula, which runs something "more Co2 = massive poisoning of everything'???

In which case your screen name is 'true'...

Did you understand the question?

Do you know why the molecular Oxygen level in todays atmosphere is about 21%?

How did it get to that level and WHY?

How is the fossil fuel reserve related to the O2 level in the earths atmosphere?

As a greedy species we have burnt less than 1% of the total fossil fuel reserves on this planet

If we buirn approx 5% of the fossil fuel reserves we would ramp up the atmospheric CO2 level to approx 1% (or 10,000 ppmv)

Under those CO2 levels the earths average surface temperature would increase to about the boiling point of water (~100degC)

although we would vanish from the scene well before that.

So my question to you is HOW MUCH FOSSIL FUEL DO YOU WISH TO BURN AND WHAT CO2 LEVEL IN THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE ARE YOU WILLING TO TOLERATE BEFORE YOU FRY OR MELT?

(or another way of posing that question is "why are you willing to cook your future progeny and relatives?")

And what effect will 'burning fossil fuel and adding Co2' actually have???

Co2 is used by plants to produce oxygen.....so more Co2 = more Oxygen from plants...
Simple isn't it???

And NO Co2 level will make us 'BURN'....Only complete morons think so...

Gizmo,
Can I ask what your scientific background is exaclty?

(just wondering whether you inderstand the difference between the dynamic Carbon cycle that is essentially biologically based and the naturally sequestered and STABLE/STATIC carbon in the earths crust)

Gizmo is having a bit of difficulty with that high school level science project.

I may have to think up of a more simpler Primary school level scientific question.

I will really have to dig very deep into my library now - this is far too much work for a long weekend

Progressives have buggered up education to the point where the population is too stupid to believe the "settled science". What to do?
Step forward snake oil merchants (Gore, Flannery, Garnaut, Combet) who nevertheless want to present scientific arguments nobody understand for taxing the great unwashed, dumbed-down populace.
Now they are wringing their hands and knotting their brows - they are concerned.
The great unwashed can see the one argument they have heard many times before, in all sorts of contexts before - more tax.The progressives have the same solutiion to very problem. More tax. SO the great unwashed rightly say - go get ****ed (not knowing the mathematical formula for it, they speak plainly).

Look, piling on the stupidity won't help you.

Climate science is the statistical analysis of the weather.  Climate science has abolutely no data other than measurements of various aspects of the weather. Getting all po-faced and snooty about high school science will not disguise your inability to think.

My my, you are a sensitive lot you AGW DENIALIST priests (incidentally the Pope doesnt refute the high school level science that underpinns AGW)

There is no argument in the Scientific community concerning the fact that human activites such as fossil fuel combustion and deforestation are driving CO2 levels upwards and thus warming the planet.

Now that we have established that you have no or minimal exposure to anything remotely resembling science (or at least you are secretly hiding your climatology PhD) I do have one further question for you entertain.

How many times did you vote for John Howard?

Let us summarise the nuerotic conspiracy based paranoia of a typical crack pot AGW DENILIAST cult priest.

1. On the Sabbath of the combustion of oil and its derivitives there shalt not emmiteth the gas known in dueteronomy as Carbon Dioxide.

2. Such a gas is NOT increasing in the earths atmosphere as a direct result of such human activites.

3. The gas known as CO2 is not a greenhouse gas

4. THe planets average surface temperature is not increasing

5. EXXON knows best

6. How do I vote fo John Howard again - our most beloved mentor and AGW DENIALIST high priest?

(Axioms 7 and 9 are ommitted due to Psychiatric orders issued against the Church of AGW DENILIASM which has also refused to inlcude an 8th Axiom - ooooh mysterious)

Yes Soren we must be transported back to the dark ages of enlightenment (a conservative oxymoron oxymoron).

The world of Soren - where progression and forward looking advancement is to be banned by his totalitarian corporate welfare slave system.

Yes my friends - its is Soren - the man who voted for John Howard - nto once - oh no once was not enough for Soren - He galloped into the plling boot with his autocratic corporate Bible in one hand and his aboriginal lecturing treatise in the other and voted for his on EVERY occassion

And this becomes the basis of his valued scientific assessment of the evidence that has proven the human links to global warming over 30 years ago.

Allow me to leave Mr Soren with a vlaued reference to Arrhenius - the Nobel Prize winning chemist.  Arrhenius actually predicted that the earth would warm and ice sheets will melt if CO2 levels were allowed to increase uncontrollably due to human activites.

He actually made some basic calculations as to how mucht he earth would warm and how much ice would melt if the CO2 level increased by a factor of 2.5.

Not a bad estimate for 1896 hey Soren?

Bu then again they say that Arrhenius was not only a brilliant scientist, but a foward looking, enlightened, progressive thinker.

You were not Forbidden to comment or express an opinion.

Its just that when I need an medical opinion on a tooth ache that I have I dont go to my local mechanic.

Read the rest of the thread. It's a difficult process because I was trying to get some buy-in at each stage. First of all I explained how the greenhouse effect actually works in terms of greenhouse gases  dispersing long wave infrared radiation that would otherwise have escaped into space, then I discussed the actual quantities of carbon dioxide produced using coal and oil production figures in giga tonnes, and demonstrated that it was of the same order of the increasing CO2 in the atmosphere (taking into account that a proportion is absorbed into ocean sinks etc).

We have at least one poster here who can follow the scientific argument quite well.

In my experience ridiculing somebody's position on the matter is probably counter productive, and we just end up with a slanging match, making it difficult for somebody else. We need to demonstrate how the science backs it up, and it's possible to do that using neutral, non-emotive language and without resorting to "appeal to authority". (eg. 2000 Climate scientists can't be wrong, or "what are your qualifications in climate science?")

Unless you're getting into the details of climate sensitivity and the derivation of radiative forcing equations, it can all be explained by basic science. Now feel free to continue as you are, but I just offered a more constructive approach, although it does take some effort.

Other people read these threads.  A lot of people in the general community are confused by the various views that are put across. You just have to look at the newspaper reports to see that. An example was an article that asked (paraphrased)  "What do you tell your kids about Climate Change with all the confusing information that's going around?"

Our challenge is to explain it in simple indisputable terms, one mouthful at a time.  Now I know that takes a bit more time and effort, but I think it's worth it.

Please don't take this as a criticism. I was there once.

There the AGW mindset in a nutshell: you ask a question and make up the answer and then off you go with your stream of consciousness about - politics. AGW is about John Howard and the anyone who voted for him. Pathetic.

How is all this drivel a response to anything?

Explain the science from all angles?

What do you mean? Care to elaborate?

Read the rest of the thread. It's a difficult process because I was trying to get some buy-in at each stage. Muso,
You make some sound and rational points.
However I cannot see how one argues with an AGW DENILIAST on scientific grounds.

Its a bit like arguing with the flat earthers - no point!

I prefer to expose the nuerotic and/or dishonest motivation that drives these AGW DENIALIST priests.

You only have to see the data they post and so called "valid questions" they pose concerning AGW

Its like watching the CEO's of the big tobacco corporations stand up in a Congressional Hearing in Washington and under oath, declare to the world that smoking their tobacco prodcuts does NOT lead to health diseases susch as ling and throat cancer.

I know what you mean, but let's do it on another thread as opposed to the Climate Science thread . Not everybody who reads these posts is a 'flat earther'.

Ok, I've split this off the Climate Science thread.

Ahem, more plants? not a chance with rapid deforestation (burning!) and loss of arable land.  Half the problem is the erosion of our planet's natural ability to sequester carbon.  The ocean will one day spit it back in our faces, care to read up about a certain lake in Cameroon?

A certain lake in Cameroon? Is that the Cameroon that is the leading generator of antropogenic CO2 due to its massive steel and manufacturing industries?
Or the Cameroon that has a lake next to a volcano leaking CO2?

What will be the average global surface temperature if the CO2 level in the earths atmosphere inreases to 1000 ppmv and 10,000 ppmv?

How much of the earths fossil fuel reserves will need to be burnt in order to reach these levels and how long will it take?

What will be the effects on the earths climate, sea level, ice cover, glacial cover, cyclone intensity and frequency etc if these CO2 levels are reached?

Can I ask what your scientific background is exaclty?

(just wondering whether you inderstand the difference between the dynamic Carbon cycle that is essentially biologically based and the naturally sequestered and STABLE/STATIC carbon in the earths crust)

That is precisely the sort of question the pope asked Giordano Bruno -what are your quals to argue?

Or as AGW alarmists are asking everywhere - why don't they believe us?

So I gather from your frothing at the mouth in religious tongues that you are not willing to entertain an answer to this simple question?

You have an interesting technique of avoiding the facts and answering questions.

Why would you need to hide behind this childish technique?

Unbearable.

Just  little bit more; no time at all.

Irreparable damage: heat, melting, every imaginable VERY BAD THING.
(Same question as the first one, though. )

Happy?

Q.1 Estimate the change in average global surface temperature should the atmospheric CO2 concentration rise to a level of 1000 ppmv. [25 Marks - 30 minutes]

Q.2 What proportion of the Earth's total fossil fuel reserves need to be extracted and burnt in order to increase the atmospheric CO2 levels to approximately 1000 ppmv [15 marks - 20 minutes]

Q.3 Discuss the Greenhouse effect in the Earth's atmosphere and how atmospheric Carbon Dioxide concentration influences the retention of heat in the earth's atmosphere and surface. [25 marks - 30 minutes]

Q.4 Discuss the global ramifications of a warming planet and its effect on sea level rise, glacial and polar ice melting, clathrate releases and the frequency of catastrophic climatic events. [25 marks - 30 minutes]

Nearly 14,000 tons of waste are now produced each day in Guangzhou, which has a population of more than 10 million. Of that, about 11,000 tons is buried in four landfills, while the rest (3,000 TONNES) is burned in two large incinerators, he said.
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2011-02/18/content_12036001.htm

Q. How many tonnes of rubbish do they burn in China (assuming Guangzhou as the norm across the land) per year? (pop. 1.3 billion)

Trick question: do they release the fumes into the atmosphere?

Supplementary trick question: whatcha gonna do about it??

The Chinese have a long way to go before they become as decadent, wasteful and as intensely Carbon emitting as the average Asutralian

So this is your rational for living and thinking the way you do?

Well done!

Your true essence is ringing very loud and clear in here.

Let us summarise the Soren nuerotic based immoral existence hey?

1. Soren hates any energy source that is renewable, sustainable and clean

2. Soren does not accept the simple Principle of Universality - perhaps the oldest collective moral norm and ethic known to Human kind

3. All decisions concerning this planet are to be made in the Autocratic, undemicratic and Oligarchically fascist boardrooms of mult national corporations around the world - who incidentally require social welfare bailouts to cover their arses when financial excrement hits the fan.

4. All people below Soren's self perceived standard of living MUST remain there and pushed further into poverty so that the RICH Plutocratic Corporate tyrrany can bend everyone over every day and de-rimm their spiritual essence - and that includes the self deluded Soren.

5. There is a point 5 but I may have to run it by Muso or Julian Assange before I make it public

6. There is also a point 6 but I dont think Soren is ready emotionally and spiritually for the truth yet - so we shall leave that for another time perhaps hey?

In Soren's defense, I don't think he's against renewable energy judging from his previous posts.

Well, we seem to be importing an awful lot of them. Is it some sort of we-are-the-world outreach? A Colombo-plan to teach them how to be wasteful, decadent Australians?

We should start deporting them all, no? Back to those non-decadent, frugal,  thoughtfully Carbon emitting cantons of China (and states of India etc)?

That's what you should say if you wanted to be consistent but being you - vain,  preening, muddle-headed - consistency is, of course, unforgivably non-diverse. Having diverse, logically incompatible views is a must for prancing, my-virtue-is-bigger-than-yours 'progressives'. For you it's a triumph, for me, a tragedy, that there are millions of you.

There are aboriginal property owners in this country.
Not the same thing.
