This is sober and sensible stuff. The causes of sober and sensible people are often ruined by fellow-travellers who latch onto ideas and appropriate them to their wholly different ends.

The Greens are a good example of this. Howevr, governments generally are also tempted to expand their oversight (and tax take) under any excuse, even if their social control agendas are not so plain and simple as that of the Greens.

The shrill idiocy of the AGW catastrophy peddlers ruins the chances of the sensible and plain idea of renewable clean energy becasue they insist on bringing into the mix of ideas their demand for the equal rights for arsophilia, to kill the unborn and the feeble,  and most importantly, their complete hostility to ordinary people.

The single Green MP in the House of Reps spoke on his night of victory about gay marriage as his most important issue. Who the hell wants to buy a climate policy from such a Green? His interest is in social engineering, not limat engineering.

It's a distraction - it takes us away from the main issue. You take something that is fundamentally solid, and then you get a bunch of Mr Bean clones to sell it. Did you ever see Mr Bean and Whistlers mother?  What he did to that painting is similar to what the Greens are doing to the issue of renewable energy.

On the Influence of Carbonic Acid in the Air upon the Temperature of the Ground

Svante Arrhenius

Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science
Series 5, Volume 41, April 1896, pages 237-276.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

You have to love the nobel winning chemist Arrhenius for not only writing about human driven global warming, but also publishing his global warming predictions IN 1896

At the time he had very little data, and the post industrial CO2 level had only just started creeping upwards (and weren't even known anyway)

Arrhenius calculated that the earth's temperature will increase by about 8 degC if the CO2 level int he atmosphere increased by a factor of 2.5. He also predicted that ice cover will melt at the poles

He used basic thermodymanic laws, physical properties of gases and  and some experimental data which was availiable at the time. His 8 degC prediction is capmparable to modern atomospheric computer modelling predictions.

Like I said the verification of AGW is a high school level science project that almost anyone an carry out.

Climate Change is one of the battles that we wish to end for but we cannot persevere to do it. I agree that climate change at the present times is one of the greatest crimes that we undauntedly committed  to Mother Earth since we are partaking to destroy her and worrying to kill for. How can we really help to eliminate this crime if we are insensitive enough to care for our environment? I guess we should start to act on ourselves for us to see the change that we want to see in the world. We should undoubtedly step up to our comfort zone to see our real dwelling place begging a help and to hear as well Mother Earth's soul crying because she is being drawn to a great destruction that we human had caused her. Climate change had conquered its long journey that until now it is persuasive for us human. Let me be the voice of change that could speak to human race to understand her and address her prominently.

GREENS leader Bob Brown says the coal mining industry should foot the bill for the Queensland floods because it helped cause them.

”It’s the single biggest cause, burning coal, for climate change and it must take its major share of responsibility for the weather events we are seeing unfolding now,” he said.

But not even the saucy IPCC head buys it:

SPECIFIC natural disasters such as Cyclone Yasi and the Brisbane floods could not be directly linked to man-made climate change, the world’s leading climate change authority said yesterday.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change chairman Rajendra Pachauri said the general observation that climate change was bringing about an increase in extreme weather events was valid but scientists needed to provide much finer detail.

That would be quite correct!

Just as it would be a very large stretch to attribute a specific environmental factor, to the obesity of one specific person.

However, as time goes bye, the overall impact of the past & current environment, on human obesity, is becoming more apparent.

That analogy, is similar to how I would also view local, short term  weather events and longer term Climate Change!

Climate Change, can also be compared (in some ways) to another rare/unique event called Peak Oil.

In 1956, Peak Oil was a rare phenomenon, only put up as a "theory" by one person, M. King. Hubbert.

Hubbert's Peak Oil theory was derided by most and confirmation of the fist part of that theory was still 14 years in the future, when the USA finally hit the Peak of the Oil Production in 1970 and US Oil Production is still in decline today, some 40 years later.

Around 2004-2006, depending on what statistic you believe, we also effectively hit Peak Oil, Globally, as predicted in Hubbert's Theory!

However, Hubbert's theory became much more than theory, well before Global Oil finally Peaked and if governments (local & Global) had moved early enough (say 20 years ago), then we would not be faced with a looming catastrophe, of such a magnitude.

The same goes for Climate Change, it has grown from small beginnings, to a point where the majority of Climate scientists are in broad agreement that our climate is heading for undesirable changes and that certain human related issues are contributing to that change.

So, again we have a choice, we can bury our heads in the sand and say they (the scientists) are wrong. We can take our chances and do nothing, like we did with Peak Oil and if we are right this time, then we will save a few $'s, lets say 5-10% of GDP.

However, if we do bury our heads, do nothing and it turns out that the majority of scientists were correct after all, then we have a far worse situation, than we currently have with Peak Oil.

If the scientists are correct and we do nothing in the way of mitigation, then the day will finally arrive, like Peak Oil, when it becomes obvious the Hubbert & the Climate scientists were correct and because the Climate Change timelines are so long, we will have consigned humanity to an unimaginably difficult future of great hardship.

Forget everything else about who is correct & who is not, about this ideology or that one,
the crucial question is what will be the cost to us and our children, in the longer term, if we take the Peak Oil line, we are wrong and do not take whatever actions are possible to mitigate the worst effects of the GHG/Climate Change problem?

Your  story is basically a LIE. Which deniers have to do to make any argument at all.

The Australian's War on Science 61: Verballing Pachauri, again

Category: The War on Science
Posted on: May 17, 2011 7:04 AM, by Tim Lambert

On the front page of The Australian today we find the headline Summer of disaster 'not climate change': Rajendra Pachauri. If you read the actual quotes from Pachauri in the article and not the fabricated one in the headline, you'll find that Pachauri said something rather different:

"What we can say very clearly is the aggregate impact of climate change on all these events, which are taking place at much higher frequency and intensity all over the world.

"On that there is very little doubt; the scientific evidence is very, very strong. But what happens in Queensland or what happens in Russia or for that matter the floods in the Mississippi River right now, whether there is a link between those and climate change is very difficult to establish. So I don't think anyone can make a categorical statement on that."

Saying that climate change is making events like the floods more likely but you can't be certain that the floods were caused by climate change is not the same as saying that they have nothing to do with climate change no matter what The Australian prints.

The Australian, of course, has form when it comes to verballing Pachauri.

Now, you can blame the headline on an editor, but that doesn't let the article's author, Graham Lloyd, off the hook. Watch him verbal the Greens:

Dr Pachauri's comments contradict assertions by Greens leader Bob Brown in the wake of the floods that the coal industry was to blame because the sector's contribution to global warming was responsible for the extreme weather conditions.

What Brown actually said:

The full tax on excess profits by the coal mining industry, as recommended by Treasury, should be imposed with half set aside for future natural catastrophes in Australia, Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Hobart today.

"It is unfair that the cost is put on all taxpayers, not the culprits," Senator Brown said.

"Burning coal is a major cause of global warming. This industry, which is 75% owned outside Australia, should help pay the cost of the predicted more severe and more frequent floods, droughts and bushfires in coming decades. As well, 700,000 seaside properties in Australia face rising sea levels."

It seems that Pachauri is in agreement with Brown on the science, not contradicting him. It is almost as if The Australian has some kind of anti-Greens agenda.

Lloyd also got in a "have you stopped beating your wife" type question.

Asked whether the IPCC had suffered as a result of overstating the climate change case, Dr Pachauri said: "There are people who say the opposite, as well.

Don't you wish he had answered with "Has The Australian's reputation suffered as a result of overstating the case against the IPCC?

See also: Michael Tobis.

Update: Today, in their letters in response to their story gives greater prominence to Des Moore attacking Pachauri and the IPCC than to a letter correcting their misleading story. I know (because I was CC'd on a couple of them) that there were several more letters sent from scientists that they didn't print. No surprise there -- the previous time they verballed Pachauri they refused to print a letter from Pachauri correcting the record.

Pachauri says, in essence, that there have always been floods but now there are more floods because of climate change. Whether this particular flood is one from the 'normals; or the additrionals is not possible to say.
Very well. If there were a 100 recorded floods before and now there are 105, the QLD one is unlikely to be one of the additional ones. If there were 5 before and now there are 100, then this one would be a likely climate change one.

Well, how many more floods are there now compared to 'normal'  times (which were when exactly?) And how do you know that all floods that occured in those 'normal' climate condition times were recorded? How many floods occured in Australia between 1688 and 1788, for example? In China? India? In North America before 1492?

Hurricanes? As with the falling tree in the forest, how do you know that there was a hurricane if there was nobody to record it?
