SHE's a country music-singing former tomboy from a fruit block - and she has just become the nation's first indigenous Rhodes scholar.

Rebecca Richards, a 23-year-old from the small South Australian town of Berri, was selected for the world's most prestigious scholarship on Tuesday.

Ms Richards, who is studying anthropology at the University of Adelaide, will continue her studies at Oxford University, which will become her new home next October.

"My family went crazy when they heard," Ms Richards said. "My mum is ecstatic."

Balancing her love of her land -- she has custodial duties on indigenous land -- with her new life in Britain will be one of 0her hardest challenges.

"I'll miss my traditional lands in the Flinders Ranges a lot," she said. "I'll also miss the Riverland and the good food there."

As her education was the result of Labor policies she would do well to support labor as a show of gratitude.

If it was up to the liberal party she probably wouldnt have been able to vote let alone get an education.
