Hanson says 'pathetic' Australian PM to blame for boat deaths

Controversial former Australian politician Pauline Hanson says the government's weak policies on asylum seekers are to blame for the deaths of dozens of people off the coast of Christmas Island

Quote:
"I believe it is vital that the truth, every fact, about this tragic incident is known to decision makers and to the general public," Prime Minister Gillard said during a press briefing in Sydney, calling the deaths "a terrible human tragedy."

Hanson said the money would be better spent addressing Australia's social problems, as would the dollars being allocated to process and support asylum seekers on their arrival in the country.

Gillard would rather squander more tax-payers money investigating and glossing over her botched policies than tackling the matter at hand. On this we can be clear.

Blame the weather, blame the smugglers, though ignore the policy's that caused this tragedy to begin with.

Cool

I couldn't give a crap!

I think even they would agree Gillards rather pathetic, this and is again trying to squirm her way out of taking responsibility for her own flawed policies.

Death of asylum seekers nation's shame: activist
BRENDAN GULLIFER
18 Dec, 2010 01:05 AM

The death of at least 30 asylum seekers off Christmas Island is Australia's shame, a former refugee living in Ballarat said yesterday.

Human rights activist Ali Bakhtiavandi said Australia was part of an alliance of western governments that had made war in Iraq and Afghanistan."

These governments destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan," he said. "Now they have a responsibility for the people we call refugees."

Mr Bakhtiavandi, 44, spent more than four years behind razor wire at detention centres in Melbourne, Baxter and Port Hedland before his case was taken up by human rights lawyer Julian Burnside.

The former petro-chemical worker said he escaped Iran in 2000 because his life was in danger. He left behind his mother, four sisters and two brothers.

"Australian, American, British and other governments call the Iranian government a dangerous government. If they believe the Iranian government is dangerous, why will they not take refugees from Iran?"

He said he paid US$5000 to a people smuggler in Indonesia and made a 72-hour crossing to in a leaky boat crowded with 36 people .

He said the people smuggler told him he would be under United Nations protection in Australia for 45 days then released into the community after a medical check.

Mr Bakhtiavandi said his time in detention centres was marked by bashings and abuse by private security guards, and mind games by immigration department officials.

"People in detention centres are not terrorists," he said. "You can release these people out of detention centres and they're not going to hurt anybody."

Labor is a sunk ship, they failed to implement the required policies in order to achieve a desirable outcome, this and are once again, trying to peddle to shore with promises of an enquiry which they hope will render them blameless.

We are faced with a government who refuses to take responsibility for it's own actions, this and will conveniently blame others for their failings.

Bad form.

They were warned within months of Kevin winning the 2007 election that this would be the likely outcome if they recklessly abolished Howards policies and closed the Nauru detention facility.

Roll Eyes They have noone to blame but themselves.

Not terrorists? Perhaps we can get a more accurate and balanced opinion? That is naive and incorrect.

Hands up those surprised with how much of the left actually agree with Hanson on this.

Cool..Or will they now do a back-flip and change their stance, so as to agree to disagree with what they initially agreed with prior to Hansons media announcement?

Too late, much of the left already agreed before she said a word!

I'd like to see them try and retract that.

"MOST OF THE LEFT" really , name them. I have not read one comment from a so called "left" commentator that backs up your assertion.
What I have read are commentators such as Mike Carlton say what most lefties here say, this was a horrible accident but nothing we do will stop people fleeing war zones for a safer life.He then went on to say what an asswipe the likes of Andrew Bolt is to try and turn this into a political wedge when the likes of you and the other rightards here were silent when 300 plus people died on one boat whilst Howard was PM, total silence.

Rubbish....the left are screaming for an overhaul of Labors refugee policies.... are demanding reform.

Ie...lets not have any detention centres at all...and make Australia an 'Open country".

So the refugees, terrorists, criminals escaping authorities in their own countries don't fall over and hurt themselves on the way into our country.

This can only go one of three ways...

Either Gillard swallows her pride and imposes similar-to-Howards border security/detainment measures this and re-opens off-shore processing, or she cowers to the far-left and renders our nation a free-for-all love in.

Or, she injects a little more funding into boarder security, whilst glossing over/re-vamping her inadequate policies...and hopes to christ this never happens again on her watch.

Cool I think she'll go for option B and C...perhaps a combination of the two...this and will look into processing them much faster.

Perhaps she could start funding swimming lessons in Indonesia, Iraq, Iran...etc...so if their boats break up they may tread water until help arrives.

Must be difficult swimming in a Jihab. Roll Eyes

how does that relate to the left supporting what Hanson said about Gillard being to " blame for the deaths"  please provide some proof, otherwise you'll just look like a liar.
