Paris: population density: 20,807 /km2, Copenhagen 6,019.3/km2, Moscow, 9,682 /km2, Tokyo 5,847/km2 London: 4,807/km2, Vienna. 4,094.5/km, Sydney 2058/km², Dubbo - er... 12/km² Enjoy it.

I calculated it (felt like channeling Muso Wink

Why would the government want to spend its money on an elaborate up to date transport system, when they can put it towards their pay rises and pension funds. It's not like they want to give the people anything.

Small European countries have modern metro systems, not necessarily underground, but still they'd put ours to shame.

Australia is a completely different type of country to smaller central European nations.

The things people find to attractive about Aus, the open space, the big cars, the easy suburban living, the sports etc - completely different to countries like Austria, Switzerland etc - which have the transport system you speak of.

Put simply, you can't have the type of metro system in a country the same size as the USA with a population of only 20m.

The sheer economics of it don't add up to have one.

The only political party with a 21st century public transport policy is...the Greens
Fast rail between capital cities and major country hubs as well as light rail for all major cities, every city and town needs city/suburb wide connecting bike ways like they have in Canberra
Europe and many parts of Asia have up to the minute public transport systems..Australia is stuck in the last century

Have a look at the population / distance ratio differences for a start. The Greens, the party for "Daydreams & Decor".

i dont think those figures are quite right. dubbo is bound to be denser than 12/kmsq. the problem is that a lot of surrounding villages (some, for instance like eumungerie is very far from dubbo) are thrown in too, so the city of dubbo covers way more space than the settlement considered 'dubbo' itself.

still, its prob uneconomical anyway. thats kind of a shame Sad

Don't discourage him from posting actual facts instead of rabid rants about nothing.

Soren is right. It's about population density. Still, it's interesting that Vienna is about double the density of Sydney. I went there recently and I've never seen such amazing public transport. The stations were five minutes walk from each other, and the trains arrived every 4 minutes. This wasn't even including the trams and buses.

If we had half those train stations and half those trains, we'd be getting stations ten minutes walk from each other and trains every 8 minutes.

I could live with that.

And then all the people could come onto these boards and whine about the Governments wasting money.....Look at the carrying on about the Sydney Light Rail network and the High Speed link from Melbourne to Sydney/Brisbane...
