Brumby rules out stamp duty cuts

David Rood and Paul Austin
October 13, 2010

PREMIER John Brumby has all but ruled out large stamp duty cuts for home buyers.

Less than 50 days from the state election, the Premier said the government had a narrow revenue base of payroll, land and gaming taxes as well as stamp duty - which earned it $3.6 billion last year.

''I just have to be honest and say there's not much room to move [on stamp duty],'' Mr Brumby told a business lunch yesterday.
''We live in the real world, so if you talk about cutting stamp duty then the question is, how do you pay for it?''

The Coalition has flagged changes to stamp duty if it wins power, but has yet to announce the details and cost.

A situation that has not changed

The Baillieu Government is funding ...

Up to $60 billion to impliment ALL recommendations of the Bushfire RC
$1.4 on a new passenger train fleet
Up to 1000 new police recruits to man railway stations

etc, etc, etc ...

... by reducing the size  of the Premier's media unit by 25%

At the same time as winding back revenue collected on stamp duty and speed cameras

GO FIGURE ?

Baillieu hasn't

Dont you find it strange 25% of Brumbys media can be cut?

Why did Brumby have more spin doctors on the payroll than DOCS case workers?

No comment on NSW Labor dirty dealings buzz.

Forget the large print and finger painting and wait and see just what the Victorian Government does, before trying to pre empt it's actions.

And without the need for large coloured font

MORE than 900 armed security guards would patrol every train station in Melbourne and Victoria's main regional cities from 6pm to the last train under a Coalition state government.

The police transit safety squad would also be expanded by 100, bringing to 350 the number of officers patrolling the train, tram and bus networks.

The Liberals' $200 million public transport safety pledge is designed to give the party a much-needed momentum boost in the lead-up to next November's state election.

Premier John Brumby said the plan raised more questions than it answered, but the Police Association said it was good news for train travellers, and the Public Transport Users Association said it would go a long way to allaying people's fears about travelling at night.

As part of the AFP's multi-faceted approach to fighting 21st century crime, Protective Service Officers protect Commonwealth interests in Australia and overseas, including counter terrorism first response at Australia's major airports. After 11 weeks live-in training in Canberra, work as a Protective Service Officer may involve:

•static point guarding
•visitor control
•alarm monitoring and response
•mobile patrols
•security consultancy services
•security training to government agencies
•counter terrorism first response at major Australian airports
•support for international peacekeeping forces.

SO ANOTHER BUZZ LIE.  HE ISNT PUTTING POLICE OFFICERS ON THE PLATFORMS AT ALL

Baillieu pledges police at every station

Paul Austin
November 9, 2009

Under the plan, announced by Coalition leader Ted Baillieu at yesterday's Liberal state council meeting,
940 Victoria Police ''protective services officers''
would be employed
specifically to patrol train stations
at night.

They would be armed and have powers of arrest, and
would cover every metropolitan Melbourne station and all stations in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon
.

And ... BTW

The
'F'
in
AFP
stands for
FEDERAL
- and has NOTHING to do with Baillieu's grandiose follies

So Bailleau's ideas are grandiose, yet Brumby's were not ?

Verge may have the fact that it would be AFP officers incorrect,  but the Victoria Police has a special Transit Police Division so in effect Verge had the right idea.

Labor pledges to hire more transit police

Mr Brumby says there will be a police presence on every line, every night of the week. (ABC TV)

A re-elected Labor Government would hire an extra 100 transit police, to patrol Melbourne's public transport system.

Victorian Premier John Brumby says $25 million will be spent training and recruiting the officers, who will mainly patrol railway lines.

100, against 1000 ?

Not quite in the same league

ALSO ...

The Brumby policy was COSTED by the State Treasury - and declared
The Baillieu policy was NEITHER - and still isn't

According to MY calculator, that's $250 million to fund Baillieu policy

Baillieu pledges police at every station Paul Austin

MORE than 900 armed security guards would patrol every train station in Melbourne and Victoria's main regional cities from 6pm to the last train under a Coalition state government.

The Liberals' $200 million public transport safety pledge is designed to give the party a much-needed momentum boost in the lead-up to next November's state election.

Premier John Brumby said the plan raised more questions than it answered, but the Police Association said it was good news for train travellers, and the Public Transport Users Association said it would go a long way to allaying people's fears about travelling at night.Under the plan, announced by Coalition leader Ted Baillieu at yesterday's Liberal state council meeting, 940 Victoria Police ''protective services officers'' would be employed specifically to patrol train stations at night.

They would be armed and have powers of arrest, and would cover every metropolitan Melbourne station and all stations in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon.

''We'll turn stations from places of fear into places of safety,'' Mr Baillieu said.

''We want anyone - a young girl, an elderly woman - travelling home on the train at night to do so with confidence and not with fear.''

Exactly how the protective services officers were deployed would be a matter for the chief police commissioner, but Mr Baillieu said there would be enough for two officers on every station from 6pm until after the last train has left, every night of the week.

Victoria Police Association secretary Greg Davies said 100 more transit police and 940 more security guards on stations ''has got to be a great thing for travellers''.

'''At least somebody now is taking the problem seriously and trying to address it,'' he said.

Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said having extra staff on stations ''would be a big help''.

''Many people are concerned about safety on railway stations after dark and this would largely solve that problem,'' he said.

It seems as though Buzz doesn't believe people should be able to travel safely on public transport -  better to pollute and jam the roads with gas guzzling vehicles to his way of thinking.

Buzz, is there any particular reason you seem to have such an issue with either Baillieu or just generally the Liberal Party?

Why on earth do you have this burning hatred of the Coalition???

It beats me, it really does.
