Not to mention many Irish arrivals in Australia being IRA members, donors and supporters

My great-great grandfather was a member of the Whiteboys (the precursor of the IRA).....

Almost everyone who emmigrated to the New World between the 16th and 19th centuries did so for political reasons. Most were persecuted for terrorism or various political crimes. Continental European protestants headed to America because of the political climate back home. Irish Catholics emmigrated or were transported for the same reasons.

Instead of terrorism, they called it treason.

Interesting that modern ethnic suburbs are now called ghettoes. If you visit any old gold rush town from the 1860s, you'll find the German section, the Chinese section, the Irish, Kanack and Indian sections.

It's funny how some things never change.

Well, according to family rumour, great-great granddad killed an english soldier and decide to emigrate just afterwards...

People who migrate as part of skilled migration tend to mingle and mix and add to the country.
Not the useless ones who turn up and expect us to pay for them.

I take my grandparents as example. Migrated to the Republic of South Africa in 1947.
British people yet where did they go? Johannesburg, where my mother, an Anglo girl grew up with anything but her own kind.
Her neighbours were Afrikaner, all her friends were Afrikaner kids and she spoke fluent Afrikaans at school.

Now wouldn't she be mingling solely with British if that were the case?

Likewise with my parents coming to Australia, friends were all Aussies, work colleagues Aussies etc - where is the ghettoisation?

However look at the shoe shiners.
You telling me that the Sudanese and Afghans are mingling in Melbourne? Strange because I lived in an Aussie suburb and I never saw them......

Have you thought for a minute Andrei that the reason recent migrants avoid socialising with you might be something to do with you?
Ive met many recent migrants and consider  many of them to be good friends, you may want to be a little more friendly towards people and you will find you receive friendship and good will in return Smiley

I think you will find that: when they try to 'mingle' in your former exclusive suburb, someone calls the cops (first - and their nearest Lib MP second)...

Considering that some of your previous posts have advocated violence and even mocked and celebrated the death of some refugees you are probably approaching these people with the wrong attitude in the first place.

Ten detainees have sewn their lips shut at Christmas Island detention centre, Immigration Minister Chris Bowen has confirmed.

“This is distressing for me and most of the Australian people, he said in Sydney today.

Mr Bowen confirmed that 160 people were engaged in a peaceful protest and 10 of whom have sewn shut their lips.

He said they had declined medical and psychological assistance.

Mr Bowen warned the protesters their actions would be futile.

“Applications to come and stay in Australia are dealt on their merit. They cannot and will not be changed by any protests,” he said.

“A protest such as this will not achieve the desired outcome.”

Mr Bowen said he had no plans to visit the centre outside of regular scheduled visits.

“I would like to express my support for the staff at Christmas Island and the Government stands with them on this matter.

“I think we can expect more tension at our detention centres as our recognition rates continue to fall,” he said.

“Where we have people who are making an application to stay in Australia, we can expect them to become frustrated.

“We can expect them to continue making protests to say that they wish to stay in Australia, that they wish their refugee application to be approved.”

Mr Bowen said the detainees who had sewn their lips were taking water and sugar, and that the Government would not allow any fatalities.

“We have the power to intervene if necessary,” he said.

Asked what would happen if the detainees didn’t want to be treated, he replied: “We do have the powers but that’s to something I want to get into at this point.”

A Department of Immigration spokesperson said the situation at Christmas Island was calm with the 200-odd asylum seekers gathered peacefully on the detention centre’s green heart.

The spokesperson said none of the detainees was engaging in “involuntary starvation” while those who have self-harmed have refused medical attention.

Earlier today, Social Justice Network spokesman Jamal Daoud said about 250 detainees were on a hunger strike for a third day at the centre.

The detainees - believed to be Iraqis, Iranian Kurds, Palestinians and Algerians - declared a hunger strike immediately after they heard about the death of an Iraqi detainee, Ahmad Al Akabi, in Sydney’s Villawood detention centre on Tuesday.

About 22 detainees at the Villawood centre started eating again yesterday, two days after they went on a hunger strike following Mr Al Akabi’s suicide.

There were chaotic scenes at the centre on Wednesday, sparked by the death of Mr Al Akabi, who had been in detention for more than a year.

Villawood was put into lockdown after a mattress was set alight and chairs and garbage bins were hurled on to spot fires.

Oh dear those boaties are throwing another tantrum.

But if you give into tantrums, they learn they can use them to get their own way, ain't that right all you parents out there?

There are many Vietnamese and Khmer boat people that landed here with degrees and supported themselves through our universities by cleaning and other menial labour jobs and have also produced a second generation that includes many of this countries highly respected professionals.
The current crop of boat people are no different, they work hard in menial jobs to put themselves through higher education and to also ensure their children are educated and become good Aussie citizens.
The refugee "shoe shiners" of today are tomorrow's business owners and professionals  Smiley
Refugees put a high value on their and their childrens education as well as setting their families up for many generations and as a rule give back many times over what this country has done for them when they first arrive seeking asylum and a new life.

Why should we accept them here?

Sorry but I refuse to see why my tax dollars should go towards people who have no skills, no wealth, little English ability and who create social cohesion issues with the locals.

Britain is struggling with the poor policy of the last 40 years, Australia should not make the same mistake.

Both GB and France have a bad Muslim problem now. Do we want that too?

That 'poor policy' would be the dogmatic worship of the Growth Fairy and his globalisation propaganda...

For example I think one of the conditions to work in Burger King on Piccadilly Circus is that you CAN'T speak English.

If you are white and can speak English, I don't think you meet the criteria for the job.

"What is that please sir? Is Cheeseburger no?"

"No I said a whopper with no onions?"

"Toilets?"

Cue puzzled look on face by said migrant....

One of the conditions of working in Australia is to pay your fair amount of taxes. Not getting paid through a self company you set up in the Channel Island

Ah the Professor is here.

So Jack, would you care to explain how I didn't pay my 'fair share' of taxes in Australia?

You telling me you know better than the ATO - who agreed on my tax liability.

I still can't believe it when you said you don't have much of an education you know.
You come across as such a smart fella.....

Australia is going to the dogs. I just found out that they let in non-white "skilled" migrants.

Unbelieveable. They actually let these people in. Doctors, dentists, teachers, nurses. Can you believe it? Who do these people think they are?

I went to the doctor's the other day, and he was one of them. I don't know where they get their qualifications from. I'm amazed they can even spell their names.

Funny thing is, you never see these people in civilized company. They don't hang out with us. No wonder. Who'd want them!

I wouldn't mind if they WERE shoeshiners. At least they wouldn't be hiding behind some fake profession.

Shine em up good, doc, chop chop. Doctor, eh? Well, you make a great shoeshiner. I wouldn't let you near my boils but you know how to get a mirror shine. Where'd you get your degree from - some third world university? Ha! Put a bit of spit on em, boy, don't be stingy. Well, that degree of yours didn't go to waste. You don't mind working up a sweat, I'll say that for you.

Shocking Karnal, how dare they let in (non-white) Doctors, Dentists and Nurses who were trained in the finest British teaching Hospitals..We should burn them at the stake...

You said yourself on yahoo that you got paid through your company you set up in the Channel Island. So you tell us why you had to get paid through a company from the Channel Island and not like normal working Australians and get paid in Australia.

The only reason I can see you doing that so you wouldn't have to paid tax in Australia. You might of got paid $500 a week in Australia to keep the ATO happy and the rest from the Channel Island.
