Howard being a die-hard monarchist knew this, and also knew, that had he stepped down in the 2007 election, Costello would have become PM, Rudd having only won by the skin of his teeth, not the victory some ALP supporters would have you believe, so it's my view Howard intentionally bought us some time, in hope a monarchist leader would find it's way to the liberal leadership after he stepped down, he just made damn sure it wasn't going to be a republican, Pete Costello.

The people will eventually decide whether we become a Republic.

Are you saying that Howard deliberately sacrificed his beloved Party for the sake of the Monarch?

Now that is unbelievable Mel. Howard loved his job so much that he clung onto it in the dim hope there would be a miracle. His selfish actions caused the downfall of the Liberals and left them floundering in the wilderness.

If he had handed the job over to Costello - the Libs would have been returned.

Quote:
Yes he bought us some time, but we still need to work our asses off to scathe off what will be the ruination of our country should the prince of darkness finally achieve his objective

So Howard's "sacrifice" brought upon the ruination of this country? What an old fool he was.

You're off your rocker if you think we're taking more refugees than we can cope with infrastructure wise.

Have you actually looked at what % of our growth is due to refugees???

Ever heard the word negligible???

We have bitten off more than we can chew, 'sustain'.

It's a vicious cycle, the more we immigrate today, the more we'll be required to immigrate to take care of what we immigrated yesterday, tomorrow...don't you get it?

Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth, we lack infrastructure and due to ALP squandering (I think intentional) we look like spiralling further into deficit for the next 40 years if the red-books are on the mark. At which point, Asia will come in for the kill.

Take-over! Economically speaking.

Think about it, if we are already producing more greenhouse emissions per-capita than any other nation on earth, this and have severe water (blue-gold) shortage concerns, how is it going to be in another 50 years when  we have more than doubled our population if we continue growing unsustainable the rate we are at present?

See, Gillard has nothing to lose, she has no offspring who will be forced to endure the wrath of a futuristic pessimistic and disgruntled nation.

I'm not off my rocker, it's you who has your head in the sand.

No Tickfen - but your stupidity comes naturally to you. Read the posts - I was questioning Mel's statements.

<<They've already dragged us into the mix as well unfortunately. As the US sinks and their enemies increase - they'll cling onto us and pull us down with them.

Most of the boat people are coming here because of the collateral damage caused by the US's occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. The same happened after the Vietnam war.

It is our responsibility to take displaced people - especially from wars that we've helped create.>>

Exactly mantra. We cause people to seek asylum, so in turn, we must accommodate them. We can thank America and the Australian government for bringing terrorism to our doorstep.

Every action has a reaction, and Islam is spreading rapidly because of our actions. If the West are afraid of the Muslims overtaking the world, they are going the wrong way about stopping it.

Kill their brothers, and they will kill many more of you. They have the numbers to do it.

The boat people aren't responsible for this, but I agree with you generally that we need a sustainable population.

Even if we take 5-10,000 boat people a year - we are still bringing in about 200,000 to 300,000 migrants and they are all bearing lots of children - the baby bonus being an incentive.

Both parties are hopeless. The Libs might end up sending the asylum seekers to Nauru - but how is that going to help curb our population when the top end of town wants us to increase our migration intake substantially. More people - more consumers. It's all about big business.

No Mantra, Howard bought us some more time.
The very reason he wouldn't commit to a full term, though refused to stand down as leader of the liberal party itself is because he knew what the egotistical opportunistic traitor Costellos had in store.

He is a bit  of a martyr, perhaps the last Aussie battler, (other than Abbott)..given he sacrificed his own political career, and wore the mud in order to buy us some more time, in hope we would figure this out and save ourselves before China own us outright.

Trouble is, we are slow learners, well some of us are anyway, and have allowed ourselves to become bogged down in race/gender-politics...

I think this is it, next election will be the straw that breaks the camels back, our back,  if we don't turn this thing around in time.

Pauline Hanson was bombastic and careless, but she wasn't entirely wrong.

She went about it the wrong way, and as a result, has made it even more difficult for the liberal party to overcome their daemons, this and make their point without being branded racists.

What's the point in being dead right afterall?

It amazes me that some people spend so much time at their computer, and still neglect to gather just a little bit of information about the subject they're debating.

Essentially, you are suggesting we throw in the towel and sacrifice ourselves, in the name of charity?

Think about it. Undecided

Mel - the boat people comprise only a minute percentage of our total migrant intake.

It is our international obligation to take these people and process them. If the majority of Australians had been happy with Howard's Pacific Solution - he would still be in power today.

The basis of a democratic state is liberty.
Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC), Politics

Something the Liberal party forget is there own party turned against the Pathetic Solution......and will again if Abbott tries to resurrect this inhumane policy again......Australia does not need to treat genuine refugees like criminals to make some pointless statement that has no real benefit for Australia....the boat people are taken from our net migration intake so there is no increased migration due to boat people.....this is just a political wedge for the opposition to divide Australia.....it is quite disgusting to think Australians can be so callous and cruel to secure what is nothing more than imagined freedom and democracy......divide and conquer is Abbott's policy.....and the right fall for it every time.....why am I not surprised???

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

knock knock.....hellllllooooooo is anyone home???????

The Pacific Solution SOLVED the illegals as the numbers dropped to THREE boats per year!
The Rudd/Gillard solution is 6 boats (at least) PER WEEK!

And the retention rate by Gillard is at least 95%.

Then those retained are able to bring in others.

Must be a very tall building where you are as that penny still hasn't dropped - but lets hope that the penny is dropping buddy!

Howard instigated the FTA with China although admittedly this government is continuing his work. There is little difference in the common goal of both parties. Free trade - open borders etc - that's globalism and our country unfortunately is part of it.

Both parties get bogged down in trivia while the serious issues get put into the too hard basket.

Healthy trade is fine, but when it comes to modern (China-backed)  ALP's one-china trade agreements, whereby we place too many of our eggs in the one basket, it has the potential to result in disaster.

Who do you think funded Rudds campaign Mantra?

China!

No. Do you have a link to that Mel? Rudd wasn't even that fond of the Chinese according to media speculation and when he was PM - Swan actually legislated that the Chinese government was restricted from purchasing our assets - although it was still open slather for corporations and individuals.

How can it be healthy trade when there are 1.4 billion of them and 23 million of us? They have their own currency and work for a pittance. We can only sell them our minerals.

Howard changed our foreign investment laws from a 27% (something like that) to a 49% investment in our companies just before they sold off Telstra. Shocking.

He also removed the Capital Gains Tax from all properties that foreigners bought here - meaning they could buy and sell our homes and land at massive profits and not be penalised. We still had to pay capital gains though.

Everything the coalition did to this country involved a fire sale. I wish the current government could move a bit quicker in prohibiting it - but they're not unfortunately.
