But Karnal, it does beg the question WHY would you abandon your family (wife/children etc) and destroy all your documentation, before you paid the AU$10k to get on a leaky boat....

How many of them actually destroy their documentation? What are they told prior to arriving in the destination? The whole subject is quiet difficult, but I suspect that not everything is ALWAYS as sinister (though in some cases it might well be) as some make out.

I can tell you why some of them leave their families behind though - "they" (and I say "they" knowing it's impossible to speak for all the migrants) genuinely believe that they will be able to arrive in Australia, set themselves up, and be able to send money and have their families sent over. Given the role of women in some of these cultures, it's not difficult to see why the men don't send their wives and/or children over on their own, is it.

Let's be fair though Jay...Most of the refugees come from countries where you need 2 or 3 forms of ID to walk down the streets (and use a public toilet) and where the police can stop you and demand indentity papers whenever they feel like it...
The same situation that the 'big brother' nutters rave about whenever the 'Australia Card' is mentioned....

If you can't buy milk without carrying an ID card, what are the chances that you'd 'forget' to grab it when you ran for the border????

Which countries would those be?

It wouldn't be one of those which hasn't conducted a Census in yonks - and/or can't tell us whether the 'Coalition of the Killing' have wiped out millions of civilians, or just hundreds of thousands...

Seriously, tho', there are many circumstances where having papers might immediately endanger someone's life...

True story: in a South American country, a relative of my children (who are the offspring of political refugee) was arrested in her late teens and incarcerated for 19 months without charge - on the basis that her details were recorded in the address book of her then former boyfriend (who was a militant)...

For most of her incarceration period, her family didn't know whether she was dead or alive...

Which pretty much supports MY post...Afghanistan under the Taliban, Iraq under Saddam( I think).. and a few other socialist/communist countries...

Australia's pretty 'free' and open...but how long has it been since you went out without a wallet/purse with a license/medicare card(or some other form of ID) in it??

If someone is fleeing persecution, then they would be wise not to risk having papers on them as they attempt to cross the border...

But how can they EVEN reach the border without the papers????

We don't need nor want more crap people from shite countries in our country.

Yea well if we lived by those rules you'd have never been born here, white south Africans should never been allowed to bring their supremacist shite here.

Oh, yes. And they would just happen to be nice white people too.

As horrible as you'll pretend it is, this country is a white country, and thus, whites are most compatible with it.  This is not to say that no non-white people can be of benefit, but certainyl the greatest number of comaptible migrants are going to be white.  Nothing sinister about that.

I think so too. Many non-white groups are obviously very hard working and in some cases, are eactually more intelligent than white people. I don't see why this fact inevitably should result in a wholesale race replacement of the majority people. I don't think anybody here wants to be a minority, even if one will end up a minority to highly intelligent, high achieving Asians and Sub-Continental Indians.

That says nothing about the effects multiethnicity may have on things that people here may consider important. I say let's have an ethnic status quo like in 1924. Bring people in here by the proportion that they are in the population at this present moment.

And reduce the overall numbers to negligble proportions.

We even had the Sri Lankan Government, an Australian ally, saying that Australia was a soft touch and that most of these people are not refugees but wanted terrorists.

Yes, a modern society like ours has no need of goat herders.

It's amusing that some of these asylum shoppers left as Tamils but by the time they get here they are Sri Lankans so as not to cause alarm in our society.

Tamils fleeing alleged persecution would do best to sail to India where about 180,000 Tamils now reside and do not face persecution.

The ALP, the progressive party, the party of ideas, the workers' friend, is the only Australian political party to roast four young Australians in roof cavities. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

Your proof of that is?

The obvious solution (which has been suggested many, many times before) would be to have a referendum to find out.

Such an important issue must surely deserve a referendum?

I won't be holding my breath waiting for one, of course.

Care to show me where my post refers to the race of the people.
It referred definitely to skillset and origin of countries where the education level is markedly better than others.

But nope, nothing on race of the people at all....

Come on, Andre. You're among friends here. No need to play to the stalls.

We're a white country. The Aboriginals were a momentary aberation.

Multiculturalism is a brief aberation. In a couple of years time, we'll be back to the White Australia Policy, Lord be praised.

Or the people could have taken your suggestion of not voting for the GREENS or Labor, BUT more people voted for the GREENS and Labor than the 5 coalition parties, if your original post on the matter were true, the majority agree with the treaty  signed in 1952 by LIBERAL PM PIG IRON BOB MENZIES.

Imagine if Pakistan had a referendum on the 200,000 odd refugees they get there each year. Imagine if Pakistan even cared.

Still, you can't go wrong with democracy. Take the one to two thousand people we get on an average year to the polls. Let the people decide.

The original treaty was designed to deal with people displaced by World War 2. Mostly Europeans.

I read somewhere the other day that the treaty was modified in the early 70's to allow the 'free for all' situation we have today and ALP Prime Minister Gough Whitlam agreed to the changes on behalf of Australia (with no consultation with the Australian people, of course).
