According to last night's news, NASA's looking for volunteers for a Mars colony they hope to start by 2030.....only drawback is that it's apparently a one-way ticket.....

Yeah - I had that in the back of my mind. If I was younger, I would volunteer in an instant.

Yes I agree. Very exciting. Now where are my copies of Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars.

A positive story about the future for a change.

And remember Gizmo, a chance to visit Olympus Mons, the Martian pyramids, the big face and cruise the canals in an anti grav gondola.  Smiley

Come on mate - you're a dreamer.
Who the hell would want a one way trip to Mars?
The living conditions would be deplorable & dangerous.
You'd be like Dr Smith in Lost in Space -
trying to get back to Earth.

Who told you that the Orion won't bring them back to earth? It has a Marian lander

The facility is completed, and the US Department of Energy has a ton of supercomputers doing simulation programs 24/7 with better nodes being built.

I should split this thread. It has nothing to do with Laser fusion.

I'm pretty sure that it would be possible to provide controlled environment, enclosed settlements (Think of really futuristic shopping malls. Just imagine it.).

The basic ingredients are there already. (They are also on the moon... and especially on Phobos. Land some Solar panels on Phobos, and use the electrical power for electrolysis to produce oxygen and hydrogen. Hey presto, you have a refueling station in a very low gravitational well. )

The first step would be landing some basic robotic infrastructure to start building, to start producing oxygen from the water that exists in the regolith and produce some  living quarters to start with.

Actual terraforming would be centuries away.

UNITED NATIONS — Bolivia will this month table a draft United Nations treaty giving “Mother Earth” the same rights as humans — having just passed a domestic law that does the same for bugs, trees and all other natural things in the South American country.

That is possible?

But, it won't result from this sort of action!

At some stage we're going to have to come to terms with the fact that if we don't collectively give a damn about our environment .. then we're permitting and inviting global genocide.

That's the bottom line.
