I'm not too sure Locutius. I've always been non combatant.

The best steel at that time (early Medieval) was Arabian steel. They used a kind of  laminated steel, starting off with relatively thick layers of two distinctly different steels, and cold working and annealing it until the layers were microns thick. The two steels gave incredible flexibility and hardness at the same time.

Arabian scimitars were legendary. The edges were typical unannealed.

That's the term I was trying to remember - thanks Soren.

I'm in the course of planning a trip to Europe.  Driving in Italy might be one of my challenges Smiley

I see that they have a speed limit of 130 on the autostradas, but they are very narrow in some cases.

It should be fun.

Interesting, I am also contemplating a Europe trip, or at least starting to think about it!

Where are you thinking of going to, how long are you thinking of going for and what time of year?

I must admit, I'm thinking of using a tour operator.

After going thru the USA a couple ofyears ago, I must admit that driving in large, unknown cities, on the wrong side of the road and particularly in places where I don't know the language (road signs etc), is a little daunting!

We did a little driving in LA and up to Yosemite & San Francisco and between Jasper to Calgary in Canada, but not Washington, Boston and a number of other cities and certainly not New York! In fact, I wish we hadn't driven around LA!

Yeah, my sister visited LA many years ago, and said driving there (LA) was a scary experience....

Does anyone drive in New York??

Well, there were certainly lots of cars in New York, day & night, but also lots of yellow cabs. I saw a few of the cabs in near accidents, one nearly cleaned up a woman pushing her baby in a pram. The woman was just ahead of us, crossing at traffic lights, with the walk sign up and the cab only missed her by inches!

About 5 weeks all up towards the end of May 2011. Initially in Italy (Near Fabriano, MAR) and the last 3 weeks in Scotland. Spending 3 days in Singapore (recovering) on the way back.

These are the ground rules for the event I'm attending - The rest is in Italian. I'm attending as a visiting nobleman. (strictly non combattant, although if I play my aulos it might be considered an act of aggression  Grin  .)
