HHHMMMMMMMMMM   MR TANNER

Lindsay will have a general business development brief at Lazard Australia and will also pursue policy initiatives of potential benefit to Australia's economy and financial markets," he noted in a statement.

"Lindsay has had a distinguished career in the Australian public life and has won wide respect across the political spectrum for his abilities and policy work. We are delighted he will be special advisor to Lazard," Mr Wylie added.

Lazard has recently been appointed by the Government to provide advice on the $43 billion national broadband network (NBN) program.

Lazard said Mr Tanner was not involved in the appointment of Lazard to the contract and he will not have a role in the NBN project.

Mr Tanner joins recent special advisor appointments at Lazard Australia including Lindsay Maxstead, former chief executive of KPMG Australia.

He also joins former prime minister Paul Keating, who currently serves as chairman of the Australian arm globally.

Howard put up for ICC presidency
Updated March 2, 2010 18:52:00

Former prime minister John Howard has been nominated as Australasia's candidate to serve as International Cricket Council (ICC) president from 2012.

Mr Howard will become the ICC's vice-president in June after Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket jointly-nominated him as their candidate.

The ICC presidency rotates every two years, meaning Mr Howard will take over the top job from India's Sharad Pawar in 2012.

Mr Pawar assumes the presidency from David Morgan in the middle of this year.

Mr Howard's nomination was reported as being in doubt as recently as yesterday, with New Zealand Cricket pushing for its candidate and former chairman, Sir John Anderson.

At a press conference in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Howard said he was honoured to be given the chance to take on such a role, and stressed his desire to see cricket become a truly worldwide game.

"My nomination has to be formally ratified by the ICC," he warned. "But I look forward to working in the interests of a game that I've loved all my life and is very dear to me.

"I want to see it promoted all around the world, even more than it is at the present time.

"There are a lot of challenges but also a lot of opportunities at blending different forms of the game and making sure we get the best out of each is very important."

He laughed when asked if, as a "cricket tragic", the appointment was his dream job.

"You could put it that way," he said.

"[Being called 'cricket tragic' is] one of the nicest things that anyone ever said about me. [Former Australian captain] Mark Taylor gave me that description and it fits the bill.

"I've always loved the game and it's a game that brings Australians together - it's our one truly national sport and it's also a game that brings hundreds of millions, even billions of people together on the Indian subcontinent.

"I would like to see it grow in other areas as well. Any sport should be looking to its future as well as consolidating its past and cricket is no exception."

The inability of CA and NZC to make a decision led to both boards forming a joint nominations committee, headed by an independent chairman in respected Australian businessman Sir Rod Eddington.

In a joint statement, CA chairman Jack Clarke and his NZ counterpart Alan Isaac said the final decision came down to Eddington's input.

"We are pleased that an eminent candidate in John Howard has agreed, after an exhaustive process, to take the role of joint Australia-New Zealand nominee for the ICC presidency," they said.

"It was an extremely difficult

Howard can get up to $200,000 per lecture so he doesnt exactly need the money. and being denied the cricket job-  by Indians of all people who complained that australia is racist - is a badge of honour.

I agree adelcrow. Many of us liked Costello and he was more fiscally responsible than Howard - although like Rudd he made a few very expensive stuff ups.
