Ombudsman finds Domestic Violence campaign Misleading: Mens Groups call for change

Please help promote this news item.

http://www.articlesaboutmen.com/2010/09/ombudsman-finds-domestic-violence-campai...

On the first anniversary of the launch of the South Australian government’s Don’t Cross the Line campaign, the Ombudsman has found the Office for Women guilty  of unreasonable and wrong administrative action after failing to correct false and/or misleading information on the campaign website.

The Ombudsman asked the Australian Institute of Criminology to investigate the errors after a complaint by Men’s Health Australia showed that statistics on the website misled the public about the nature of violence in young people’s relationships.

Men’s Health Australia spokesman, Greg Andresen said “The research evidence shows that, as far as young people are concerned, the experiences of males and females with regard to relationship violence are quite similar.”

“Around a quarter of young people have seen either mum hitting dad or dad hitting mum, and it’s more likely they’ve seen their parents hitting each other than seeing one-way violence from either parent. Young males and females are also equally likely to say ‘yes’ to the statement ‘I’ve experienced domestic violence’.”

“As far as the attitudes of young people go, the research does show that some young people hold unacceptable attitudes to violence against women. For example, 8% of young people agreed with the statement ‘it’s okay for a boy to make a girl have sex , if she’s flirted with him, or led him on’ and 11% agreed with the statement ‘if a guy hits a girl he loves because he is jealous, it shows how much he feels for her.’

“However, many more hold unacceptable attitudes to violence against men. For example,

    * Young people are more likely to say a woman ‘is right to’, or ‘has good reason to’, respond to relationship conflict by hitting (68%), than a man in the same situation (49%)
    * While males hitting females was seen, by virtually all young people surveyed, to be unacceptable, it appeared to be quite acceptable for a girl to hit a boy (25% of young people agreed with the statement ‘when a girl hits a guy, it’s really not a big deal.’)
    * Female to male violence was not only viewed light-heartedly, it was also seen as (virtually) acceptable.”

Instead of presenting such data on the Don’t Cross the Line website, the Office for Women instead presented erroneous statistics such as “95% of domestic violence involves a male perpetrator and a female victim” (the data shows that overall, at least one in three victims are male). While some of these errors have now been corrected, the website still contains a page of inappropriate statistics about violence against women only.

In an interview on ABC Radio on September 2nd, Minister for Women Gail Gago claimed that the campaign “is not a contest about who is the biggest victim.” Men’s Health Australia is hopeful this means that the campaign will be altered to present a balanced picture of relationship violence.

Mr Andresen said, “Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research recently found that the NSW Government had published eight ‘statistics’ in need of correction in their Domestic and Family Violence Discussion Paper. There appears to be a widespread culture within women’s departments that downplays or denies the existence of male victims of relationship violence and abuse.”

A coalition of thirty men’s health organisations and individuals has written to the Premier asking that the Don’t Cross the Line campaign and future respectful relationships and family violence campaigns be moved from the Office for Women to a more suitable government department.

Toni McLean, a counsellor for men and women who use violence said, “The consequences of the government’s one-sided view of relationship violence are devastating for young male victims who don’t speak up because they think their circumstances are unusual. Equally, the vast majority of boys who are non-violent could grow up with the distorted and unhealthy view that many of their peers are abusive to females.”

Micheal Woods, adjunct fellow at the University of Western Sydney, said “The Government has a public duty to present facts honestly and with integrity when releasing information in the public domain, especially about such an important area as relationship violence. We fear that the Office for Women may be ill-equipped to continue a role in designing and implementing respectful relationship and domestic violence policy because of their demonstrated bias.”

One sickening aspect of this type of story is the arrogance and hatefulness of too many people in "positions of responsibility", such as those who authorised and approved of this ad. They should be trying to encourage harmony, not hatred.

Does that make false propaganda ok?
Domestic violence needs to be tackled HONESTLY, and in a balanced way. Using the subject is as a vehicle to bludgeon one sex or the other, is nothing more than an extension of domestic violence, and only aggravates the problem.

The first step in dealing HONESTLY with something like domestic violence is to understand the extent of it.....

And in truth, the media in particular has fostered the misconception that domestic violence is ALWAYS "Man beats Wife"....

This ad appears to be an attempt to correct that idea..

Did you read the OP Gizmo?
I believe we should be working towards helping people find a formula, or set of guidelines for creating a harmonious domestic environment.  There will always be dysfunctional individuals, but hopefully we could minimise problems?

So basically you are all getting wound up because men are only the perpetrators of 99% of domestic violence rather than 100% and this ad failed to communicate this detail?

These false statistics were not put up by accident, it seems they have wilfully mislead the public...but to what end?  Surely there must be anothe reason other than just 'because they are militant femo nazi ball-breakers'?

It happens.....

CLEVELAND, Ohio (CBS/WOIO) An obese woman who killed her boyfriend by sitting on him will not serve any time behind bars.

Mia Landingham pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday and was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service, according to CBS affiliate WOIO.

Landingham, who was believed to weigh over 300 pounds at the time of the Aug. 2009 incident, sat on Mikal Middleton-Bey as he was face first on the couch.

According to her lawyer, there was a history of domestic abuse between Landingham and her boyfriend, FOX News reports.

Investigators say the victim was 5'10" tall and weighed 126 pounds. andingham is 5'9" tall.

A police scale that went up to 350 pounds wasn't enough to accurately weigh the Cleveland woman, according to the affiliate.

The point being?
Are you saying violence by women on men is OK ?
Can you see how this attitude STARTS real domestic violence?

No, aussie it doesn't.......but accepting that it happens to both women and men is a necessary first step to reducing ALL domestic violence.

Don't be ridiculous.

I'm saying that violence perpetrated by women rarely has the same extreme consequences as acts of violence committed by men. Does that make it okay? No.

This isn't an issue of equality between the sexes, it's an issue of safety.

Apart from the silliess of a double standard, it is obvious that if we hit anyone, we can expect retaliation, eventually.  Telling women that it`s OK to hit men is inflaming the situation.  There is an limit to the amount of abuse anyone will take before they retaliate, everyone has their limit, why push to find it?

But the perpetrator is still a male?

Next time you blokes are getting a manicure together you should have D&M about this issue. You will feel better for having talked it through.

It looks like someone is a bit truth adverse here.  If having a little tanty makes you feel better, that`s nice, but it isn`t helping to solve any problems.

I am glad there is a step being taken to look at this issue from a non-gender specific angle. Some women are violent in relationships.

Agreed, also there are more ways than violence, to hurt a person.
The only way to deal with a problem is to face it honestly.

So rather than vague generalisations, why don't you guys start with the truth? What percentage of domestic violence is perpetrated by males?

You'd have to define domestic violence. As I've said, or meant to say, calling someone a name is enough to be classified as domestic violence, so as to beef up the figures for maximum outrage.  Withholding money so your wife can't gte her weekly pedicure is classed as financial abuse.  Honesty in defining abuse would be a welcome start.

How could we?  We've been fed bullshit for so long....but this, although being a 'mens rights' website, does offer some interesting stats (which I tried to cut and paste but it just doesn't format right)

No we haven't. I am struggling to find even a single false claim that we have been fed, or any claim at all, or any counterclaim. All I see is complaining about a bit of imagery.

I read the OP and it wants to counter a current campaign which has not been linked. If it is the campaign that I am thinking about, then it is about more than violent abuse, it is about psych and sexual abuse also and uses the example of drug junkies and alcohols as examples of perpetrators.

If that is the campaign to which the men's group refers, then even I agree that it is bias.... you see it removes the middle classes from the problem and places the issue within the scope of white trash.

The problems of violent, psychological and sexual abuse to which children are subjected is a problem for both genders irrespective of the dominant gender of the perpetrator. It is a middle class and upper class problem as much as it is a lower class and gutter class problem.

If the perpetrator is male, then the female in that picture, if there is one, must act... that they don't act to remove themselves and children, makes them as guilty as the perpetrator.

All forms of serious domestic abuse needs to be addressed, to take a one sided view is worse than useless, it`s inflamatory.
