God I wish they would hurry up and make a decision. It's been 2 1/2 weeks!!!

We have to make a decision in 5 minutes essentially for the swinging voters and they have 2 1/2 weeks. They said they were going to announce the winner today. So much for that. Just hurry up. You have had long enough.

There's plenty of time, there are many other countries who are or have recently been in a similar situation to the global dissatisfaction with corrupt and inept longtime entrenched political parties.
Things are ticking along nicely so we have plenty of time to make sure the independents who hold the balance of power can make an informed and long term decision  Smiley

If these three Independents go against their own conservative electorates, their political careers will end as soon as a minority Labor government comes to an end 12 to 18 months from now. It wont last, it's an unstable and dysfunctional government with some characteristically ultra left-wing ideals.

Ie....same sex adoption before marriage, commy mining tax, irresponsible and unsustainable  immigration which will further detract from our standard of living.

If they don't half-time change sides after having sworn allegiance to the ALP this is...this has been done before.

Either way, a 'minority' Labor government wont last the full term.

Hey what's going on? do we vote more than once on your poll James?
You, adelcrow and myself does not equal 5 votes.

Anyway, that's beside the point. They should take as long as they need to decide. The country is running along smoothly, better than for a long while to be honest.

Although, I can't really fathom why it would take this long to decide. It seems that there could be 2 going with labor and one with the coalition, the odd man out may have to jump over to the other side to avoid going back to the polls. I'm just saying that from comments I've heard today.

Did you manage to get into the young labor party James?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/09/06/3004121.htm

Quote:
Independents strike reform deal

Independents Tony Windsor, Bob Katter and Rob Oakeshott (L-R) have secured a deal on parliamentary reforms.

Federal Parliament will have an independent speaker under changes agreed by the three country independents and the major parties.

The independents - Rob Oakeshott, Bob Katter and Tony Windsor - today held talks with Labor and the Coalition about a parliamentary overhaul.

Speaking to reporters this afternoon, Mr Oakeshott said a deal had been reached.

Under the agreement, Question Time will be overhauled, with questions limited to 45 seconds and answers capped at four minutes. The replies must also be relevant.

Mr Oakeshott said the changes would give ordinary MPs more power and strip away some of the control from the executive.

"The Australian political system up until now has been overly dominated by the executive, and the Parliament has played a secondary role to the executive, the ministers," he said.

"In the last parliament we didn't even talk about the gang of four. That's going to change in this parliament, and I think that is a positive change for parliamentary democracy in Australia."

Leader of the House Anthony Albanese and manager of Opposition business Christopher Pyne appeared alongside Mr Oakeshott to hail the deal.

"We have achieved a terrific outcome for the Parliament," Mr Albanese said.

"I'm very happy with these reforms. The Coalition has been pushing for them for some time," Mr Pyne said.

Mr Windsor, who also appeared before reporters, added: "This is a great moment, in my view."

Labor agreed on the independents' proposals yesterday, but there were some sticking points for the Coalition.

However, the Coalition signed off on the deal this afternoon.

"Thankfully there has been goodwill across the board and we nailed it," Mr Oakeshott said.

The independents are expected to announce tomorrow which party they will back to form a minority government.

I think EVERYONE is getting heartily sick of the independants now. Their parliamentary reform ideas might even be a good idea but that is not what the election was about. it was about selecting a govt and the 3 stooges have derailed that process. I believe now we shoudl have a new election simply because i dont think it will ever be possible to have a stable govt with these 3 morons clearly willing to throw their weight around.

The GG should call a new election based on the fact that neither party can form a majority.

yum    I love waffles.

I heard Barnaby today, he's thrown the towel in already, said the indies won't go with the coalition because of their dislike of the nats. Shouldn't he be keeping the home fires burning?

It's not that critical yet. A new election would be a tremendous cost and should come as the very final resort, if all else fails.

Barnaby is in a unique position, the Liberal Party hate his guts and the independents think he is a first class moron..The only support he has is in the Queensland National Party.
Howard and Costello tried everything they could to keep Barnaby out of the Senate..

Reform is good - and long overdue!

Now we have a semblance of democracy - and the LibLabs are on notice to start delivering on sustainability and the inclusive egalitarianism of the 'fair go'!

Reform is always good, but you assume the 3 stooges model of reform is actually GOOD reform. And it certiainly isnt being obtained democratically and in fact is being obtained by threat. And it is for that reason that I beleive all or most of these 'reforms' will fail to eventuate. I saw a independant (peter lewis in 2002) demand a constitutional reform convention in return for his vote to support Labor. Labor duly held the convention and then did absoltely nothing about it as did the Libs. Reform by threat has a bad smell about it and at the first opportunity either (or both) parties will jettison the 3 stooges and their demands. When you are an independant you basically trade on goodwill as that is all the power you have. when you get the balance of power and misuse it by threat as these morons have done you extringuish all the good will and when they no longer have the balance of power they wil be totally ignored and overruled on every single item.

We the people have sent a message. Just because you don't like our message does not mean you can ignore it and go back to the poles.
We have had our say. Those who voted informally, have thrown away their right to have any say for three years. It is time that politicians grew up and played nicely together. Kindy kids behave better than they do.
