Australian National Flag Day
Sep 3rd, 2010 at 3:39am

Today is Australian National Flag Day, of which is being celebrated across our nation.
This day commemorates the first occasion when our national flag was flown, on 3 September 1901 when Prime Minister Edward Barton announced the winning design from a public competition to select our new nation’s flag. 32,823 entries were received with five of the designs being identical, writes John Vaughan, National Spokesman and Vexillographer for the Australian National Flag Association.

So how will you celebrate Australian National flag day today?

by taking the union jack off it, move the commonwealth star up a bit - keep the rest.
That's the Australian flag.

We don't need anyone else on it.

i have never flown or owned an Australian flag with the union jack on it, and never will.
It is not Australian with that on it.

Special day flagged by students

2nd September 2010

...

GETTING an early start on National Flag Day, students from Ipswich Central Primary School got their hands on a piece of national history.

Principal Damian Johnson said the school displayed a giant Australian flag at the school’s assembly yesterday as part of an early celebration of National Flag Day tomorrow.

“It was a novelty for the kids to all stand underneath the flag and hold it up,” Mr Johnson said.

He said the school’s choir would perform at the city’s Flag Day celebrations in d’Arcy Doyle Place from 10am.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said he was proud the city would provide the premier event in Queensland to celebrate Australian National Flag Day.

“Ipswich is celebrating 150 years as a municipality, and this major flag-raising event, the state’s largest, is a tribute not only to the city but also our national emblem, which is just 109 years old,” Cr Pisasale said.

No Union, Jack.

Most Australians are happy with their Australian flag just the way it is.

plenty aren't and haven't been for generations.
It's a pommy flag, the whole world looks at it like that.

The Union Jack is British. This is not Britain.
The real Australian Flag is the stars on the blue without the Jack.
Look at it sometime if you can find a copy. It is totally Australian and speaks to you if you are Australian.
The British Union Jack on our flag is irritating and cringeworthy.

I will never fly that flag as long as I live.

It's our flag, and a majority of Australians and their descendants are proud of their Australian flag, this and wouldn't want it any other way.

Cool..Despite the tortured left squirming in disgust over others devotion and pride in their national flag.

I mean, how dare we right?

it isn't mine and I'm Australian of seventh generation descent; and you will find there are probably millions by now of Australians who feel the same.
It is not the real Australian flag, the Union Jack is a foreign flag; and as long as that is on it, I will not salute to it, or accept it as mine.
It's a pommy flag.

the Australian flag is the seven point Commonwealth star and the Southern Cross, on the blue. That's all. It's proud and strong by itself.
The Union Jack on it is weak.

Well, this is our national flag, like it or lump it.

What if you gave birth to a child with an undesirable trait, would you ostracise it also?

It's an Australian thing I guess.

My grandfather defended his country and saluted this flag.

my forebears fought to defend this country not a flag.
I have the right not to accept the flag of the oppressors of my ancestors.
The Union Jack is a sign of oppression to many Australians. It is not mine and I will not accept it with the Union Jack on it.
Like that or lump it. You people need people who think like I do about this, more than we need your pommy bloody bars.

This is our flag, love it or hate it....and irrespective of how you may feel princess, this is our gorgeous Australian flag.

Cool.... Furthermore, flags don't suppress a people, people do...and like you say...your forbears fought to defend this country, not some flag.

So why disrespect it simply because it's not to your design liking?

it is *your* flag, you silly old queen, because you are a pom, not a real Australian.

the Union Jack Australian flag is the anglo protestant Australian flag. Don't expect everyone to like it.
It is weak-arse having a pommy flag on our's. How demeaning.
