What is an enemy?
Sep 2nd, 2010 at 1:33pm

What is an enemy?
Do you have any?

Subject: Enemies

"We do not want to be spared by our best enemy"

"You should have eyes that always seek an enemy- your enemy. And some of you hate at first sight. Your enemy you shall seek, your war you shall wage- for your thoughts."

"You may have only enemies whom you can hate, not enemies you despise. You must be proud of your enemy: then the successes of your enemy are your successes too"
Nietzsche Thus Spoke Zarathustra

"Why is it crazy people have enemies?"
Mental patient to me in conversation the other day.

What is an enemy?

Do you, have you had any enemies?

How useful or important can they be?

How wrong is it to have them?

Why do crazy people believe that they have enemies?

What is the opposite of enemy?

Thanks

I reckon your enemies are proportional to your friends...take for example a movie star...they will have their throng of screaming fans, but for every fan, there's someone who hates them.  Then think of a recluse...he doesn't have any friends because he just doesn't get out to meet them, but he also doesn't have any enemies for the same reason.

Not sure what an enemy is. Perhaps someone with who you are engaged with in a hostile struggle to achieve something, get somewhere etc.

I don't think I've had any enemies. Certainly if having an enemy involves two parties coming to the table in a display/act of animosity, then no, I have no enemies.

They can be important, at least so far as keeping people on their toes (take a business venture for example). It also allows us the luxury of knowing where we stand in relation to our enemy. Conversely, it might assist us in re-evaluating certain relationships, be t with them or others.

It seems wrong - ideally we would have none - but I suppose it's not entirely avoidable. What's most important is how we engage with those who are enemies, and attempt to improve that relationship if at all possible. I will say though, it seems very counter-productive, this enemy business.

Not sure why 'crazy people' have enemies. Or what a 'crazy person' is in this context?

The opposite of enemies? I'm not sure, perhaps friends... genuine friends who serve multiple purposes (utility, love etc.)

Then again, all the above might well be rubbish.

I'm a pretty fantastic chap. No enemies here.

Just wondering. Does the enemy definition require a mutual response?
Eg someone hates you but you don’t hate him. Are you classified an enemy to him or he is only an enemy to you?

I guess so.  If we assume that a friend is the opposite of an enemy, it stands to reason that the criteria would be equal but opposite.  I don't think you can call someone a friend unless they feel the same about you, so the same should apply for an enemy.

AN enemy is a friend whose grievances you haven't accommodated yet.

I believe an enema is the injection of liquid into the rectum through the anus for cleansing, for stimulating evacuation of the bowels, or for other therapeutic or diagnostic purposes.
