Unfortunately though, such a tough job was always going to cost lives. That's just how it is in Afghanistan. The price to pay would be much greater if we weren't there and let the fuzzy wuzzies run riot.

What I fail to understand as do my mates, 2 of whom have been in the army 1 in 4RAR in Holsworthy.

Is that it is a deadly game we have been sucked into playing.

We go to bed in afghanistan then the insurgents come out of a night time and dig up a road and plant tank shells, connect the detonator device cover and leave.

Now this process of digging up rock hard compacted earth takes about 45 minutes to complete they are roads well away from any communities. So why are we allowing this to happen, then our solidiers travel down the very road where these were planted looking for them???

Does this make sense??? it a dam disgrace we allow them to plant bombs then we go look for them???????

Why haven't we got un manned drones flying above known IED roads and when a person or group spends more than 5 minutes in the same area of say 30 square metres the spot gets recorded and a mortar rounds rains down on it????

Why ar ewe wasting our men looking for bombs that we allow them to plant, its a game of hide and seek with deadly results??

My cousin is in the Royal Anglian in the British Army and he was in Afghanistan, but is now elsewhere.

He said half the time, and this was the case in Basra too, is that they are hindered by very strict rules of engagement.

They (and the Australians too) can only specifically return fire when various criteria are met whereas the Americans can proactively open fire first.

yes the rules of engagement are like this but converted to civillian life,

A armed gun man is robbing a bank the police are on the way, they can only catch him while he has his mask on is still carrying the gun and is still in the bank, once he leaves the bank he is a free man even though he shot all the bank staff, once off the bank site is now a non cambatant and is free to go and can not be apprehended, however he left his gun balaclave and ID behind we know who it was where he lives and know he will be back at another bank tomorrow to do the same, we can watch him enter the bank but can do nothing, we watch him put on his gear and shoot the staff and rob it again we can watch it happen, but again he drops his gun and balaclava exits out a side or back door and again is now untouchable.

This is just a diabolical mess.

Any one who thinks what I just wrote is wrong google rules of engagement.

Just like Vietnam, it's their territory and they have an intimate knowledge of it.

You can't beat the enemy if you don't know who the enemy is.

The very same people who are being paid by the USA are planting the bombs. Muslim countries do not want Western democracy, so it's a good idea to stop pushing it on them.
