About what - that the Greens are here to stay?

Absolutely.

The lesson is in fact in this election.

...............

Yet the Greens only enjoyed a 3.8% swing and at the end of counting picked up just one HoR seat.

Once the Greens start spoiling in the Senate, as the Democrats did, the people will move quickly away from them.

The truth of this will be seen in the first by-election.

Yes it will and fortunately DT you are not always right. The problem with the Liberals and their supporters is that they are just too arrogant.

Abbott is no Howard and we have seen now how quickly the political spectrum has shifted.

Hopefully it will be a long time before one man and his party has absolute power again.

The Greens have been growing slowly and steadily - do not assume they will blow it - even though the thought obviously appeals to you.

I hate to have to remind you but my predictions for the rise and fall of Kev and the fall of Jules have all been accurate.

It has been the opposite for you.

Arrogance plays no part here.

The voters chose and with a stunning collapse of a first term government's vote (with Jules being the best they had according to Bill Shorten - and you if I'm not mistaken) this shows I have not put a foot wrong.

That said, it doesn't matter ,as Costello just said on the TODAY show, no matter who forms gov, we'll be back voting within months, not years.

Now, I've gotta confess that: that would be close to one of my worst possible nightmare scenarios!

I feel sure that I'm not alone in that sentiment - and that even a lot of right whingers would shudder at the very possibility...

How is the new makeup of the parliamentary Coalition anyway!? If a leadership spill occurred now, would more of them back Abbott and Fascist Barbie or more moderate leaders like Joe Jockstrap and/or Mal Talksbull!?

Certainly, the latter team would be more user-friendly with the electorate and more likely to secure a 15 year period of governance...

United they stand ATM - but for how long can Abbott & Co hold it together!?

Same goes for the Labs, of course!

I was referring to your predictions for the Greens. You might not like them, but in many areas of Australia they received 12-14% of the primary vote - far more than the Nationals who received approximately 4%.

As Bob Brown pointed out - it should be one vote only and no preferences as they don't give a true picture of who the people want to run this country.

I think it was the 2001 election - Beazley/ALP had a great deal more primary votes than Howard - yet Howard won.

Thanks Skippy.

We need to get rid of the preferential system also for a fair win of a seat.

That's a pretty big victory for them, their first ever in the federal lower house.

I was under the imrpession that the democrats were undone mostly by the GST - hardly by spoiling. It was when they were spoiling that the public supported them most.

Speaking of Mal Talksbull, he seems to have gained a bigger swing (+12%) in his own seat than either Tony Abbott (+5.0%) or Julia Gillard (7.6%) - Gillard having a bigger swing towards her than Abbott...

Speaking of Joe Jockstrap, he's had a big swing (+9.3%) to him too - also bigger than Abbott or Gillard but smaller than Talksbull's...

Oh, and poor ol' former Lab Leader Kevin Rudd suffered a swing (-4.4) against him...

Curiouser and curiouser, eh!?

My prediction was accurate.

The popularity polls showed the Greens polling 14% and I predicted that would bleed away on election day.

They polled 11.5% nationally which is actually less than they have polled at by-elections.

What was particularly notable was the votes all came from their coalition partner as a protest vote.  They will not retain them.

I also said;

deepthought wrote on Aug 21st, 2010 at 11:50pm:
The first thing you will see is the bitter justification that they should have got more seats.  They know they failed to capitalise as the swing in the Hor was to the Lib/Nats, not them in any significant way.

And Bob has shown that I am right if according to you "it should be one vote only and no preferences".

That is his bitter justification for only getting a single seat.

Not really.  They didn't get it from the Lib/Nats so they actually worsened their situation.

With that seat Labor would be closer to retaining government.

Inadvertently they have put themselves further away from being heard because the Lib/Nats won't listen to their shrill hypocrisy.
