Is it the beginning of a new Holocaust in Europe? This time for Gypsies

Yesterday, the first group of Bulgarian and Romanian gypsies residing on the territory of France illegally was deported to their homelands.
Deportation of the gypsies is based on the decision taken in late July by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Based on the information that nearly 200 camps of gypsies who arrived from Bulgaria and Romania are the hotbeds of drug trafficking, child begging, prostitution and unsanitary conditions, he decided to shut them down and deport their residents.
It must be said that the decision to evict the Bulgarian and Romanian Gypsies was seen in Europe as controversial. In France itself, representatives of opposition parties (the Socialists, the Greens, and the Communists) are critical about the measures. They believe that Sarkozy and his right-wing party the Union for a Popular Movement (SNM) is trying to raise their rating by playing on nationalist sentiments, and therefore is trying to present the Gypsies as criminals.
With all the objective pros in favour of the French decision, there is an unpleasant historical analogy with second world war era. Gypsies along with Jews were among those peoples whom the Nazis intended to fully destroy in gas chambers. And, as if atoning the sins of Hitler.

Reply #1 - Aug 21^st, 2010 at 1:09pm I remember when Madonna tried to lecture her Romanian audience during a concert on tolerance for Gypsies and was booed off the stage. You can't really convince Europeans that Gypsies aren't terrible. No amount of liberal badgering can do it.

Reply #2 - Aug 21^st, 2010 at 1:30pm Some how I doubt it athos... After all, the Gypsies where only deported, not interned in camps... People in Europe have thought the Gypsies to be thieves, child-stealers and witches/warlocks for centuries.... And it is entirely possible that Sarkozy is right about them too...

It's why nobody likes them.

Sadly, that's quite an accurate assessment. I remember the Romanian gypsy women at the Eiffel Tower. They are still trying to score money from tourists using the gold ring scam.

One of them got very angry at my wife. She said to the gypsy- 'I found it and I'm going to hand it in to the police.'
