You don't learn to spell (or not) at University, you're supposed to learn that in primary school. When you get a whole generation of people who can't spell and can't do numeracy either (because they actually don't teach that much any more at school, god only knows what you *do* get taught there now), you get that sort of thing in the workforce which, for example, prepares street signs.
In case you hadn't noticed, Australia has the same problem, it didn't used to, but it does now. BIG TIME. You should see the appalling level of grammar and spelling in school leavers' cv's - and they're looking for a job. (eventually it will be ok though, because the people reading the cv won't be able to spell either, so you'll get a job - it's the ones who *will* be able to spell who will be seen as a "threat" and end up not getting the job. Don't worry things will work out!)
It is the school system, athos, and the inordinate cultural emphasis on *watching television* and the drivel that is on there, ahead of the *written word*. If people *read more*, instead of just listened to stupid television shows and head banger music, they would be better able to spell.
Read a book (or even a bloody newspaper) today!

I recently saw how hard Japanese school students study, especially the males (as a result of peer pressure)...these students study until they DROP!! They DO NOT WATCH stupid television shows, especially really dumb western television, which is actually *designed* to make you not think; and they can all spell their own language correctly, including the thousands of Chinese characters in their language. They would be ashamed not to be able to do that.
Their future *depends* on them getting good grades at school, and getting into a trade or profession. If they don't achieve that, they are in BIG TROUBLE financially for the rest of their lives.
BIG DIFFERENCE in Australia isn't it. People in Australia are the luckiest people on the face of the earth that they can slack off and be cone heads or alcoholics, and still succeed.
It will change. Enjoy it while you can.
