My point being simply this!
Surly broadband can wait given most of the speeds it is designed for won’t have any real usefulness for up to another 10 years.
Why is it Australians are the ones who fork out the cost only to have it privatized to then be charged a fortune to use it.
So far what Julia Gillard is telling us is at 43 billion dollars to run all those cables the cost would be per kilometer $287.
These are figures Telstra have quoted not mine. So if it’s not 43 billion dollars are we silly enough to believe it would cost less.

Would it surprise anyone here that our rail from Sydney to Melb actually isn't anymore! If your traveling from Sydney you have to get off at Albury and catch a bus the rest of the way to Melb. So Julia Gillard thinks that broadband is more important does she? My has she got her priorities wrong.

Both the government and the public need to sort out their absolute needs from their wants.

We have the highest personal debt per capita in the world. I've seen figures ranging from $40,000 to $50, 000 for every man, woman and child in Australia.

Oh! the lucky country. Don't forget we have to pay it back.

The problem is there is so much that needs to be fixed in this country because of the years of neglect. Where does the money come from?

I can see where the OP is coming from ad it makes perfect sense.  It`s about prioritising, which is the first step in assessment, ad decision making.  I really doubt that landline broadband is a sensible option anyway. As for an ETS, this is nothing more than a shifty currency shuffle, so dodgy people can pick up what falls through the cracks.  Firstly, we need to have a referendum on population policy, we can`t plan infrastructure for unknown population numbers.

ellis I feel that your first list is nearly right ,however I would put water first then the rest in the same order as you have.

why..well it seems broadband will cover the other wants and needs on your  list . Whether by saving us  money or enhancing our lifestyle. By keeping us travelling less- saving money to put into health-  and take demand away from transport issues.& polution .

Then there is the  benefits of health to regional areas is a plus...the future of broadband whether we like it or not is a plus it seems .

Shame the Liberals dont see this

NEW REPORT HIGHLIGHTS TELEWORKING BENEFITS OF NBN

Australia could save between $1.4 billion and $1.9 billion a year if 10 per cent of the workforce teleworked half the time, according to a new report by Access Economics.
Telework is work conducted outside designated places of business, and the focus of the report was on working from home.
