Why Nauru wont work
Aug 8th, 2010 at 1:24pm

It is Abbotts plan to send asylum seekers to Nauru, but Nauru is not recognised by the UNHCR,so the UN would not accept any of these people as refugees for other countries.
That being the case, anyone found to be a refugee, which 99% are, will have to be settled here in Australia, as no other country will accept them.
So Abbotts plan will make refugees who do reach here a certain to stay here, what a dumb idea Abbott has here.

At least we (the taxpayer) wouldn't be putting them up in motels.

What about the refugees who have been waiting in camps in places like Tanzania etc for years and years,  but don't have the resources to pay people smugglers ?  Send those using illegal means to get here to Nauru, and repatriate the genuine refugees to Australia.

If they go to Nauru they end up here, the UN will not accept them.
As for the other comment by Burwood, Nauru are not members of the UN and who says they would be accepted if they apply?
Their parliment is in as much turmoil as Fiji.

skippy,  if these people want to thumb their noses at our laws,  let them say on Nauru.  They obviously have targeted Australia as a soft touch and have no respect for our laws,.

So we keep paying for them? it doesn't matter if you leave them there or bring them here, under Abbotts plan they will be OUR problem no matter where they are.
You do know Australia would be paying for them in Nauru, dont you?

Helping out a few thousand boat people a year is nothing when you consider our migration take each year is between 200,000-300,000 people.
Australia has a lot more pressing issues to deal with  Smiley

It's not the quantity that is the problem. It is the backdoor entry and the red carpet roll out invitation that the Labor govt offered to keep people smugglers in business

Good on him. Where are the Greens on this issue. Deadly silent considering their claims of sustainability and protecting the environment. Hypocrites

Abbott knows full well that part of the reason our economy is doing so well is the permanent migration levels as well as the money the international students bring into the country..I think education is our 3rd biggest money spinner?
Under Howard migration peaked around 300,000 and not only bought a lot of money into the country but created many jobs for Australians.
Paying corrupt govts like Naru's hundreds of millions of dollars to keep a few thousand desperate refugees who end up here anyway is not only a massive waste of taxpayers dollars it is also a cruel political game the Libs play with human lives for nothing more than a few votes. Its all a waste of time, money and energy based on misinformation and politicking.

Abbott will not drop migration to 100,000 because he knows it will lead us straight into a recession and destroy the international education industry in this country.
Under either govt migration will fluctuate between 150,000 and 200,000 for a long time into the future  Smiley
