Gillard, Rudd to hold campaign talks

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she will speak with Kevin Rudd about his role on the campaign trail, after the former prime minister broke his silence on his fall from power in an exclusive interview with ABC Radio last night.

Speaking to Radio National's Late Night Live program, Mr Rudd declared his support for Ms Gillard and Labor's re-election cause and said there was no point carrying around a "big bucket of anger" about the manner of his dismissal.

Denying being the source of recent damaging leaks, he said he was not prepared to "stand idly by" and watch Opposition Leader Tony Abbott "slide into office by default".

Speaking on ABC Radio's AM program this morning, Ms Gillard said she would talk to Mr Rudd "in coming days" about his role in campaigning.

"Clearly he will be campaigning for the re-election of the Government, I welcome that," she said.

Mr Rudd told Late Night Live host Philip Adams that he was "relaxed" about whether he would be offered the foreign affairs portfolio if Labor was returned to government.

This morning Ms Gillard reiterated that there would be a frontbench role for Mr Rudd, but did not say that it would definitely be foreign affairs.

"There are a wide variety of roles he could serve in. I'll talk to him about that if we're re-elected," she said.

"But I think what Kevin is saying, what I'm saying is, our focus is on that all-important choice on election day."

Factional heavyweight Bill Shorten, who was instrumental in Mr Rudd's demise, has described Mr Rudd's comments mid-way through the campaign as "a timely intervention" and "good news".

"I think it demonstrates that all shoulders are to the wheel," he told Sky News.

"I think it demonstrates to people in Australia that this election is a clear choice between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott."

Also speaking on AM, Opposition Leader Mr Abbott said there was no way he would slide into office.

"I am opposed by all the power of the incumbent Federal Government, five incumbent state Labor governments, the trade union movement ... and I'm running against 79 years of history," he said.

"That's why I am going to have to struggle every inch of the way."

On the hustings yesterday Mr Abbott said Ms Gillard's campaign was in "real trouble" and in a slip of the tongue referred to the Government as the "former government".

Maybe I should have said "most" Liberal supporters were like rabid dogs trying to blame Rudd.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard denies she has made any promises to Kevin Rudd in return for his new-found support in the election campaign.

Mr Rudd will begin campaigning for Labor's re-election on Sunday after yesterday declaring he could not allow Tony Abbott to "slide" into office and "tear down" Labor's legacy.

Ms Gillard says she will meet with Mr Rudd tomorrow, before he hits the hustings.

She has told Melbourne ABC Local Radio the two spoke via text messages but she says there was no deal in order to secure his support.

"There's nothing to know other than what I've said publicly. There is no deal, there is no arrangement." she said.

"It's really as simple as this - Kevin is a Labor person.

"He's fought all of his life for Labor values and he doesn't want to see them trashed by Tony Abbott as prime minister."

When he was deposed Mr Rudd made it clear he wanted to serve on the frontbench, and Ms Gillard has promised him a position.

But she is still refusing to say whether he will get his preferred choice of foreign affairs.

Ms Gillard and Mr Rudd have barely spoke since she took his job just six weeks ago but she says they will be able to work effectively together.

"There are bigger things here than things about us and people and personalities," she said.

"We are exactly on the same page, in the same place with the same values about the future of this country."

Treasurer Wayne Swan says it is a "good thing" that Mr Rudd will be on the campaign.

"He made a number of important points yesterday, probably the most important one was that Tony Abbott is unfit to govern," he told Radio National

But Queensland Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce says people will be confused.

"Apparently Ms Gillard is moving forward and back to Kevin Rudd. How does this actually work?" he told AM.

"It's just going to remind people he's not there."

Mr Rudd was not the only former prime minister to surface yesterday, with former Liberal prime minister John Howard last night rallying the faithful at a dinner with Mr Abbott in Sydney.

Mr Howard branded Ms Gillard's prime ministership as a "total" failure and questioned her pledge to show Australians the "real" Julia.

"I wasn't expecting an endorsement from John Howard," Ms Gillard said this morning.

Former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Fraser, who late last year quit the party, has this morning said he does not think the Coalition is ready to govern.

But when questioned on Radio National to explain his reasons he declined to do so, telling listeners to "read his book".

In six weeks, Labor has dumped Kevin 07 as leader because he was unpopular, installed Gillard because she was popular, changed strategy and Gillard's image to the "real Julia" because the false, campaigning Julia was unpopular and now turned to Kevin 10 because the real Julia was unpopular, in fact even more unpopular than 07 when he was dumped.
