Thanks for that Ernie  Smiley those were the days, Hernando's Hidwaway (perth)

God I'd love to relive one of those gigs - goddammed unbelievable.

Cammeray, forgotten the name of the pub.

Paddington Green Hotel.

Nick screwing Caroline, the girl I was with, at the post gig party. She was his "second" girl after Anita in London & Berlin.

The phrase, the world wants to be deceived, has become truer than had ever been intended. People are not only, as the saying goes, falling for the swindle; if it guarantees them even the most fleeting gratification they desire a deception which is nonetheless transparent to them. They force their eyes shut and voice approval, in a kind of self-loathing, for what is meted out to them, knowing fully the purpose for which it is manufactured. Without admitting it they sense that their lives would be completely intolerable as soon as they no longer clung to satisfactions which are none at all.

@Soren: Sums up the current state of the West at the moment, especially the UK. Must be tough trying to stay afloat economically when you are nothing more than a 'Service Provider' nation these days.

As for Nick Cave: One doesn't need to be 'in with the clicky' to see the obvious, let alone hear him say it in an interview: "Germany brought the real me out." Must dent a lot of 'local egos' there.
Its a laugh when people try to attach themselves via a fleeting moment in Australia as if they were a personal friend. They must be 'great friends' if these 'stars' head off overseas at the first chance they can get (to get out!). Grin "Oh but I knew Nick when he was born in a Garage under a strobe light"  Grin

Aren't we charming, jasignature.

NOTHING Cave did after 1982 equalled what he did before 1982.

The only thing happened in Berlin for him was he found his junkie religion (all heroin addicts seem to find themselves in the bible - either that or die).

Yes, Germany bought the real him out - the pretentious middle aged crooner. We all go through youth into middle age, it doesn't mean that it brought out his best music. Just different.

Mercy Seat and the Ship Song are great songs. As for the duet with Kylie? And the rest of the stuff? I know what holds my attention.

lol, it is funny to think that any of us would pretend be totally immune to the cult of celebrity, and the fact that we derive some pleasure from sharing anecdotes about any associations we may have had , seems pretty harmless to me, and can even be interesting and enlightening for some of the people who have such stories shared with them.

I have lots of Nick Cave anecdotes as well, which is hardly surprising for someone of the same age, from the same town, and who moved in the same circles.

Fortunately for me, my wife was not enamoured with Mr Cave on a musical, or personal, level, so my anecdotes while similarly tawdry, in other ways, carry far less "personal" intrigue. Cheesy

American/British (Western) Music will always self-destruct (suicide) long before any German Music because they can't go as 'deep' as the Germans.
They falter, they fall, they fail ...Germany Wins. Obviously the Brits never paid the price for originality when it comes to Music.

It's strange, but I actually think you're serious...

There were no seedy implications intended by my posting that song either... I just really like it.

Now, off to find some Barry White...

But seriously, these guys flicked up on my iPod today. I forgot how much I dug this album, and how much of a crush I had on the lead singer (Juanita Stein).

I saw the Birthday Party a few times.

Personally. I found them extremely pretentious. All that pretend angst, the contrived mid set disputes between the band and the kicking over of the drum kit and the storming off stage - every gig.

Then a few months ago I saw a doco about Mr Cave and he reckons The Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party gigs were "performance art".

Don't get me wrong, I like a bit of Nick Cave every now and then, but I thought the pretentiousness was a given.
