Schubert wrote this piece 6 months before he died at 32. If it's in you to listen to a 10 minute piano piece, do not pass up this opportunity. Stick with it, listen to it, don't multitask or put it on as background. Just listen for 10 minutes.

I did as instructed. Clever but too impatient is what I felt for the most part. I didn't feel fully engaged until the last minute or two ending in the sort of wry whimsical melancholy I associate with Chopin. But y'know that was the first attentive hearing I'd given Schubert and i'll listen again.

Well, I hope it repays a repeat effort.
It is hard to encounter classical music authentically, especially intimare pieces like solo piano or chamber music, without the benefit of hearing them live first. Like theatre on TV, recordings are not quite the sameas live performances, naturally.

Ashes to snow - you will think I am an ungracious prat for saying this so soon after our tenative common ground with Schubert - but to me it is complete kitch. A kind of Kalahari Kinkaid.

No I don't think you're an ungracious prat, well no more than I ever did  Grin

I just think you have to broaden your horizons when regarding art. Ashes to snow is a hell of a composition. I don't know what you're referring to with the kinkaid, but it's certainly not Kitch. It's evocative and sensitive and skilfull, as skillfull as Schubert in fact. Show me it isn't so?
