Hard to imagine raging out to this, but we managed it. Must've been fueled with mescal and herb or something Smiley

Stayed right on that track...

...met this bloke at the bassendean library who reckons he saved Paul Kellys life!
He went and knocked on the next door neighbours house to tell em that he'd nodded off in the back yard!

Paul Kelly? Yeh, I think it was Paul Kelly!  Shocked Shocked

This song has been done to death but not like this. KD Lang is magnificent. She gives me chills every time I listen to this.

A couple of years ago I was in a pub near here that had a band on.

When they turned out to be a duo doing covers from the past 30 years a girl sitting next to me said "it could be worse, they could be doing country".

To which I replied: "even worse than country would be classical.... or even worse than classical.... jazz"

She said: "f-ck yeah, I hadn't thought of that".

Musical taste is purely subjective.

Mine? Narrowly focused. Over 1300 LPs and CDs and probably only 5 genres at max. It could hardly be called "eclectic".

Then again.... I don't get lyrics. I could hear a song one hundred times and still not be able to tell you what the lyrics are.

I can understand the attraction with classical but it doesn't work for me - I reckon a 3 min track is prob the ideal length - 2 minutes perhaps even better.

The older I get, the more simplistic I want it - guitar, bass, drums, vocals.... 4 or 5 chords max, short and hook laden.

By the time I'm 60 I'm expecting to enjoy just a fuzz tone with yelling over it (perhaps someone beating the crap out of a garbage bin thrown in for good measure).

For me? bliss....

Funny, isn't it? I'm the opposite... the lyrics are the major draw for me. Unless it's paddy rock or punk - then it's more just the sound. I can physically feel really good lyrics. Like reading Toni Morrison.

Funny maybe.... weird certainly. It's something I've often wondered about. I'm not unique, but still certainly part of small minority who don't get lyrics. I can hear a track and tell you what instruments are playing and what they're doing - but I can't tell you what the words are.
I don't know why.... I can read music and transcribe a track on a couple of listenings - the best excuse I've read is that musical training can turn the whole vocal/lyrical aspect into just another instrument.

Missing the whole lyric thing has just caused me to hunt for the musical highs.

The other weird thing is that I kind of "see" music.... when I really enjoy a track and close my eyes I see like a kind of lit up VU meter - which then turns into patterns. I get a buzz out of seeing really ordered pretty patterns - hence liking my stuff basic.

But..... also weirdly.... I'm a sucker for strings in a track.

That makes sense. I have no musical training at all.

I guess that means you don't sing a lot - I sing all the time (terribly).

I should have added (some) classical music to the punk up there, but I need everything else to be quiet and still for it. If I'm listening to classical music in bed with my eyes closed I see patterns too, so I get where you're coming from.

LOL no. I wouldn't have a clue as to what the lyrics are.... apart from the occasional chorus - "I wanna be your dog", " I wanna be sedated" etc

I've googled lyrics a few times and been horrified - bad teenage poetry.

A funny thing is that I used to go see a band that I liked. Then I got told that they were a Christian band and the lyrics were about God and Jesus. I had no idea.

Does it stop you liking the band or do you just try and forget what they're singing about?

Well I'm a bit of a bob each way on this subject. I think when lyrics matter the artist makes sure they're heard. Leonard Cohen, Paul Weller, Nina Simone, Roger Waters, Paul Kelly, it's not hard to hear what they're on about.

The perfect song, which version? I honestly couldn't make my mind up and they all put a stanp on it Ella, Nina and Annie Lennox. WELL Nina is on a run.
