I think all of us have our vices, be it religion, our family's, leisure, careers, hobbies etc, (unfortunately some resort to more destructive alternatives)...though when these vices begin to affect others adversely or impinge on others in a social/emotional context, then we really need to sit back and ask ourselves if there were a god, is this what he/she would want?

A river of blood and entrenched hatred in his/her honour?

If there is a god, then I doubt the prejudice, greed and hatred formed part of his/her divine plan, unless god him/herself were an ass-hole.

There is no wrong or right faith, there are only those who project their own ideals in the name of their said "faith".

This and set about trying to convince themselves and others that what they do is in the name of moral righteousness.

Do we really need a god to tell us right from wrong?

It's surprising how infrequently this very concept is examined seriously.

Then there's the other obvious question, which goes to the effect of: at the time/s that each of the great religious texts were written, what were the prevailing levels of education, supersition, political freedom, inequality, scientific knowledge/ignorance and overall socio-economic development!?

I, for one, think it is ludicrous to give much credence to the notions expressed in any text, that claims to be the ultimate (and only) authority, on the origins of not just humanity and all living things on our planet - but of the entire universe...

Especially, any ancient text that was written at a time when the vast majority of people were highly superstitious of the dynamic forces of nature and absolutely certain that the earth was flat...

Lamenting the shift in the Australian psyche, away from the egalitarian ideal of the fair-go - and the rise of short-sighted pollies, who worship the 'Growth Fairy' and seek to divide and conquer!

Ah yes, in the words of one of the world's great thinkers..."“It is clear from a churchman who has been elevated to a very eminent position that the Holy Spirit’s intention is to teach us how to go to Heaven, and not how the heavens go”."

Galileo
