Reform the Senate

I found this on yahoo message board and I thought it might be good to have a debate & poll on here about it

Do you think the Senate should be reform or leave it like it is. I am not putting this thread to rubbish Rudd or Abbott or any political party.

As it was setup to look after state rights.

I think that it Senators should all be independants and not belong to any political party for 10 years before they can stand as a Senators.

They all should stand for re-election every 3 years.

They should not be Ministers of the Crown.

Do you think we have too many or not enough Senators?

Do you think Canberra and The Northern Territory should have more Senators?

Do you think the Goverment of the day have control of the Senate?

Lets have a good debate on this and not get into any slanging match.

I believe the Senate should be abolished.

Along with one of the lower levels of government; i.e. State, or Local.

Let's face it.

We already have elected reps from all the states and territories in our Federal MPs.
Why do we need more at Federal level (Senate)?

Our Federal MP is supposed to represent his electorate.
Let him do so.

This could do away with State governments, leaving us with Local Govt reps.

Local Govt areas could then be amalgamated to form "super" LGAs, resulting in a lessening of Aldermen/Councillors.
Eg: If 3 LGAs amalgamate, instead of having 36 Councillors we could have perhaps 20.

Just a thought.

Like everything, some are(?), some aren't.

In your opinion, is it the elected persons, or the 'hired help' that are corrupt?

I think we need some form of accessibility at local level.

Perhaps Administrators with the Ratepayers having the right of Veto?

To be able to say which ones aren't, we first have to be able to prove which ones are.

Haha , well to me it depends who IS in the senate lol. obviously

Sometimes I don’t like the Senate’s obstructive ways,
and the REASONS for it OR behind it.

Then look at the ETS - we watch the Greens pull one way and the far right Liberals pull the other way and for that they have helped in bringing down the Prime Minister.
Whilst the opposite happened when Howard had full control - which was a bigger worry.

So I know I would prefer a non-government controlled Senate . And opportunities for small and minority interests to find their way in.

what's frightening reading this post you should not be allowed to breed we have a Senate that is not controlled by the government

. Do you understand anything at all

I never SAID that we didn't . I thought I made a general statement on senates , if not my bad....but,

You know it would be more 'liberal' if you were to only quote what I said that was Sooo bad to warrant that answer other than 'run me down' Huh
