Opinion polls - your thoughts please
Jun 28th, 2010 at 5:00pm

Here are our major opinion polls in Australia

#Newspoll - published in News Limited's The Australian newspaper
#Roy Morgan Research - published in the Crikey email reporting service
#Galaxy Polling - published in News Limited's tabloid papers
#AC Nielsen Polling - published in Fairfax newspapers
#Ipsos and I-View

But are they misleading, this or have the capacity to alter public opinion, perception however slightly?

Could it be said that some voters interpret poll results like football scores, this or use them for validation purposes as to whether or not they themselves are backing a sure thing?

How much faith do you place in opinion polls?

One  thing that concerns me  with some polls is in the way the question is worded can  (or could )be misleading...

So it would be interesting to know what questions are asked first before deciding if the poll is rogue.  Shocked

Spoton perhaps, but do polls have the capacity to manipulate public opinion, .... say if one party has the backing of a powerful media magnate ie Rupert Murdoch ..recall Rudds not so secret dinner and chat with RM in the lead up to the 2007 election?
Being seen with Rupert is in itself  politically advantageous.
Look, all I ask is that there be fairness and transparency, is this too much to ask?
Are labor afraid to give Abbott an inch?

At the risk of him slipping them a length? Wink

Because it seams like they are still quite fearful of him, or else they wouldn't be hammering him so mercilessly on their private Labor supporters only blog from afar, a blog attached to their web site, of which lacks policies btw. I found the secret members only blog by mistake.

Must everything be a secret with this sneaky Rudd-Gillard government, what do they have to hide?

The truth?

Absolutely.

Anyway, bbl...

Smiley Thanx for your responses, I just wanted to see how others felt about these mysterious polls no one appears to participate in.

Has anyone here been called up and asked who they'd prefer as PM?

Yup, I've done the whole Morgan face-to-face extended interview thingy - but it was quite a while ago now...

A number of posters on Yahoo have intermittently commented that they've been randomly polled...

Oh, and you'll be pleased to know, Mellie, that the right whingers expressed the most surprised that they'd been important enough to be polled...

Here's an example of one of the more popular Opinion polls  doing the rounds at present...of which is clearly pitched towards appealing to woman, whilst cleverly reinforcing the notion of "change".

Note: A majority of those who participate in these online sites which offer incentives to do surveys are stay-at-home mums with young kids.

Note  how key words such as Federal opposition leader/ Liberal Party, have been omitted from this survey question, as though Tony were some insignificant independent running for himself.
Why denote to Julia Gillards gender, party and position, and not Abbotts?

The poll question reads as follows.....

The Federal Parliamentary Labor Party has elected Julia Gillard as their new leader, and she is now the nation’s first female Prime Minister. Given this change, and that the Federal Election is still due sometime later in 2010, who is now your preferred Prime Minister?

Julia Gillard

or

Tony Abbot

So I ask you, opinion poll or clever advertising/spam?

Cool

You mean those pale blue and white forms we'd get asked to fill in which would pop up on Yahoos boards from time to time?

hmmm..um, no...I meant the phone polling variety, not spam.

I just assumed my filter wasn't working properly, so closed it and did a virus scan.
I think I filled one in, once...then just closed the box when they kept popping up.   Seriously, I thought they were forum feed back questionnaires, spam.

.... did some people think they were specially selected to fill those things in?

Grin Hilarious. They are random, could pop up on anyone... Roll Eyes

Did you think you were the chosen one?

Wink

Wow, I'm gobbed smacked, for I've never met someone  quite as important as you before.

Please,  forgive me  for taking so long to respond, I was blinded by your luminescence.

How can they be accurate, when just about everywhere I have read are against a Labor parties crazy Taiwanese style  government?

Rudd wrestling anybody?

They are kidding themselves, this is going to be a very short lived honeymoon for Gillard, and I think they/she knows this which is why Julia wants to head straight to the polls within just a few weeks, despite her policies being rather barren.

They cant jimmy the opinion polls forever, people are wising up to their medial whitewashing and gladiator politics.

Barbarians!!!

Smiley Do you want a pack of sneaky disloyal mud slinging crooks leading the country?

She will go down like a lead balloon, this election is her only chance to make it, and if she fails, guess who will be leading the Labor party to the next election after that?

Post 2010!!!????

An old foe of mine, we disagreed on an AWU matter (several actually) back in 2004 when he was their branch secretary.

Yours truly, Bill Shorten.

I think this is why he backed her, because he knew she would be easy to knock off her perch.

They really need to start supplying Labor MP's with stab vests.

I'll give him a few years, and he'll be leader of the Labor party.

Julia is not very well liked among her colleagues, even Swan cant stand her.

Smiley Lol, Liberal don't even have to lash out and buy their own campaign commercials, they have already been made for them.

Labors top seats are rather transient....I doubt Gillards current (and rapidly declining) popularity will be enough to get her through to the  next election, most of Australia see their party as being a joke, this and unelectable, and we haven't even got to their failed miserable policies yet....lol

Tragic...

Nigh nigh Gillard!

She had better Kill Bill while she still can.

Smiley..Honestly, this is better than a soap opera, it's like some warped  drama series... and so...... Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our Labor candidates lives....Ramsay street even?

Could do a funny skit with this Wink

Gillards finished, one way or the other...she's just a seat warmer  for Bill Short on brains!

Cool

Re Bill Shortens few years.....if that!!!

Smiley
No need for Liberal to lash out on campaign commercials....they've already been made for them.

Anyway you'll find out sooner rather than later, We''ll be voting within six weeks.
