Abbott: God's Gift to Gillard
Jun 25th, 2010 at 2:37pm

Quote:
.

Julia Gillard won't just win the next election, she will increase Labor's majority.

Kevin Rudd was Labor's biggest problem, not the policies his government has enacted, not the personnel in his parliamentary team. The published polls and the internal party polling all showed Rudd had become a drag on Labor's vote.

It is a big call to depose a first-term prime minister, but it was the right thing for Gillard to do.

We all knew even if Rudd won the next election he wasn't going to last very long in the aftermath. At least this way Gillard is letting the Australian people decide who they want to run the country after the election - her or Tony Abbott.

Of course the first few weeks of Gillard's prime ministership are going to be critical to how she performs at the next election.

Lindsay Tanner's planned retirement is a major blow. If Gillard stumbles, my prediction stumbles with her. She needs a good start to move on from the chaos of recent days.

Judging by her first speech as PM and her first question time performance, Gillard has what it takes to make Abbott look shrill when he attacks her.

Abbott's poor personal ratings might not have mattered when the prime minister was more unpopular. But if voters give Gillard a chance, such a honeymoon will turn attention back on to Abbott. That will flow on to attention to his policies, his team, and whether the Liberals have learnt the lessons of Howard's defeat. Voters don't like to admit they were wrong and that is what they would be doing by ousting Labor after just one term.

With Rudd at the helm voters were seriously considering it; with Gillard they might decide to give Australia's first female PM the time she needs to succeed or fail on her own terms.

Abbott wants to remind voters that it is the same failed government with a different leader. That argument only works if voters agree that Labor has been a failure. Yes they have had their problems, major problems, including with policy delivery.

But the three biggest problems with Rudd's first term were his autocratic style, his sudden unpopularity and his unwillingness to consult.

All three are now gone, so watch out Tony Abbott, I say.

"Voters don't like to admit they were wrong and that is what they would be doing by ousting Labor after just one term."

...and that's the labor strategy for getting re-elected is it?
Pathetic numpties.

labor anger when they're in power is nowhere near as entertaining as when they're booted out. Rudd knows about that. Very exciting for him.
You know the old labor saying: Up like a skyrocket, down like a burnt stick.
Just hope the economy doesn't come down with them.

As I indicated elsewhere, the Libs have made a HUGE mistake, in attacking the Labs for the manner in which they outsted Rudd...

They've now dug themselves a huge hole - cos they will look like even bigger fools and hypocrites if/when they do as they MUST do, if they want to be in with a chance to defeat the Gillard Govt...

They MUST do the same (or worse) to Abbott, in order to secure a semblance of a chance of winning the next election...

Problem is, Abbott's pathetic little speech in QT was a cunning stunt - a self-serving plea (and perhaps even a thinly-veiled threat of grave consequences)...

Perhaps he correctly senses that there are internal moves afoot against him...!?

At the time of his surprise-ascension, I pointed out that the nutjob Abbott is mentally ill (bi-polar) - and that he ought never have been installed as a temporary stand-in for Joe Jockstrap...

Minchin's Mad Marionette wasn't in on the party joke - he doesn't think he's a puppet and he's delusional enough to really believe that he's leadership material - especially since he's been heralded as the party's saviour to date...

I'm not sure that he will take advice on bad polling - rather, despite some self-doubt creeping in, he will probably keep the faith in himself and manically try to run with his heavy burden, whilst praying for a miracle on election day...

Will the Libs kick into self-preservation mode and sacrifice the Abbott bigot before the election - or wait for him to fall apart in shameful electoral defeat!?

Either way, don't shoot the messenger - for his blood won't be on my hands...

To borrow from religion again: as they sow, so shall they reap!

this new labor mob are a bunch of cunning stunts as well.
I wouldn't bet on Abbott not being there at the next election - you wish.

thy - i pretty much agree with that article. Rudd was a gonner.

julie is going to be MUCH harder to beat. if for no other reason than she is a woman.
the libs may have to install bishop or another woman after the election.

women will vote for gillard, some men will cause she is the first woman PM.
same as obama, he got LOTS of votes cause he is black.

there'll be a lot more men who won't vote for labor now, I predict. You better hope the women don't start voting libs as well. Then there'll be an historic landslide against labor.
Gillard will have to perform, not just have a nice different colour hairdo everyday. There are still enough Australians not "re-programed" by labor propaganda at this stage not to fall for that one. But you keep waiting, the labor party might be able to dumb down the entire population give it another fifty years or so.
Hmmm, except for that ageing population, eh. Gee where can we import more left-wing voters from?

anyway, middle ground Australians know how to vote now - make sure it's a hung parliament by voting the opposite side into a majority into the senate so labor can't stuff things up to much. Then hope for a double dissolution.

I am no Labor voter - but I make no secret, that I greatly admire Gillard - and not just because she's a successful woman...

Sure, she's gotta be special, to have risen above the multi-storey steel-reinforced glass ceilings of the ol' boy pollies - and she rivals the best parliamentary performers, with her sharp wit and steely resolve - but she is also a person of great integrity, altruism and humanity...

Since she's been compared with Obama - I'll draw my own comparison with her: they both want to make a positive mark on this world, by breaking down self-serving greed and bigotry, to leave stable and sustainable socio-economic and environmental legacies...

Unfortunately, there are many people who would undermine and cut each of them down, out of their own paranoid prejudicial fears and bigotry alone...

they need to perform not just mouthe smart rhetoric. So far it's rhetoric. Nothing's changed.
Today we hear they are "digging deep", back to the grindstone stuff.
I hope that means they aren't going to bring in more new taxes to fund their out of control deficits.

gee thank goodness those massive deficits saved us from the GFC; we would have been in real strife, mate, if we had've had that massive surplus still in the bank.
Can't have that, it would look like we're not doing anything.

Forget what the Labs do, now the Libs have to spit out their sour lemons - and try to run an election campaign without letting attack-dogs Abbott & Co out of the kennels to keep up their great big pisses on everything...

No chance - unless you ditch him, Abbott will be God's Gift to Gillard - the gift that keeps on giving...

You saying to ditch Abbott is a case he doth protest too much. He'll be there. But if he's not, who's the liberal deputy again?
Middle ground Australia decides for Australia, boy, not you people.

What did labor save us from, skip? They didn't.
